In a recent thread some people reacted to a comment made by a well known and a distinguished member of this forum. That thread gave me an idea. How about this forum establishes an honorary system, whereby such a person receives a ribbon to put under his/her name/avatar. It will be difficult to select such person(s) but I was thinking maybe Pekka and the moderators be the judging panel and select members deserving of the award. Of course all the moderators will be given a ribbon to start with. And Pekka deserves a Noble Prize or something grand like that.
What do you think?

Its a nice idea, but in my experiance will never stop the odd case of mistaken identity
VB has lots of options for customising members usernames and titles, including the ablity to let members choose thier own usertitle or stars or bars or ribbons etc under thier usernames.
I know several of the more "respected" ;) members here have thier own custom user titles.

Didn't know that a member can change these things, thought it was done by a moderator.
The biggest worry when such a system is established that some deserving members might feel unappreciated when they are not given an award.

No, he meant the vBulletin board itself. It gives the administrators the option of allowing members to change their own titles.
Obviously here it's not. But that's a good thing. With such a large forum, it would become so uncontrollable, when new members or anyone creates anything bad or silly. I've seen it happen before on a board which had 3000 members, and it got so out of control, we had to remove the function.
Of course, the recognition idea sounds good.
I've seen Best member of the month, or whatever the title it was. Of course, it was Bloo Dog, and could have been various titles.. "Top Author", "Greatest Laughs". And the list goes on.

I've seen sites that let people over a certian number of posts change their title themselves. On other boards it's a feature given to long standing members. Doesn't overly bother me whichever way it happens, or not at all.
Not sure the ribbon system would be overly useful. What would it achieve?

It's a way to say "thank you" to people who contribute to this forum. You know, a way to show appreciation.
And it doesn't have to be ribbons, it could be stars as Moppie suggested.
