My editor would like me to start doing photo columns (I'm a photographer for a college paper). Where do I start? What should they look like? How do I get around to doing them? Any tips from other photojournalists?

Those are questions you should ask the editor. What does he need re the slant of the column? How many column inches? Pics included? How technical should it be? Etc...

Are these supposed to be themed?
Consider asking your editor about photo-spreads. I've done a few for my paper (one on a cadaver lab, and one for homecoming this year) and they are pretty fun. Assuming you are using a 5 or 6 column paper layout, your width is only going to be from 1.609-1.985" which isn't much space at all.
