View Full Version : curious - anyone use 16-35 II & 500D??

I was just curious if anyone has used the newer 16-35 wide angle (i.e. the II with 82 mm thread) with a step down ring and a 500d close up lens on the front element........

You see, I was doing a bit of research on macro/close up photography. Bryan Peterson in his book on macro/close up photography suggests that the 500D close up lens could be used on a wide angle, but the 500D only goes to a 77 diameter thread, and the 16-35 - the II version - goes to 82 MM thread.

You see, down the road, someday if ever possible, I would LOVE to obtain a 16-35 (I rented one this past summer for a wedding and fell in love with it). I'm also curious now what the effect of a 500d would be in front of the 16-35, and curious if the step down ring affects the shooting in any way (for close up photography). If it does, that would be one argument to trying for a ver. 1 of the 16-35 (matching 77 mm thread), or wait until Canon comes out with a 82 mm close up lens (fat chance). As I said I just had to ask to see if anyone has done experimentation in that way........

Thanks.

Pat

I haven't tried it, but I would think with the 1.6 crop factor, you wouldn't run into the issue of vignetting caused by the step-down ring. I know it certainly would vignette on full frame, but not sure on a crop.

Step rings are cheap, so no problem in trying it I guess. (oops, just figured out you don't have the lens)

Here is a shot with the 16-35 II at 16mm with a 77mm CPL on front (I don't have a step-down ring so I just laid it in front of the lens - inside of the outer threads)

No visible vignetting.
