never done family photos before

I may have a session here with a fellow from church and his son. I am obviously going to focus on their eyes and from my understanding an aperture around 5.6> they will both be in focus and numbers around 1.8 one will be in focus and the other won't but i am using on camera flash so I think i will be fine
if anyone has any pointers i would appreciate it
