This lens is in backorder heaven, however I can wait a month or two instead of paying retail prices. Anyone know if it's got a metal mount? And where is this lens made in?

Thanks!

I don't know where it's made, but it does have a metal mount.

The one I got is assembled in China (like most gear today, most likely). It is quite a good copy, nevertheless.

I heard that they are also made in Japan, but most likely you can't check that before.

Best regards,
Andy

Mine was assembled in China, also. It's a good copy never-the-less. I don't think there is much difference where they're made (apart from dodgy russian/eastern block countries). My Canon 420EX was made in China, too.

Mine was made in china as well. Super solid lense. I'm super happy with the purchase and it was worth every penny.

I was one of the luck to buy it from B&H like a week ago when it sold out in 10 minutes :]

Quickben,
How long have you had your 420EX? Mine's made in Korea.

Mine was made in Japan. I bought it from Adorama about 2-3 weeks ago. My favorite lens so far.

Hmmm....

I wonder if there's a quality difference between the china and japan version?

Mine says "Made in China. Tamron Japan"

lol.

Sticker on box I have states "Assembled in China of Japanese & Chinese parts."

I don't think there is a difference as long as the parts are all the same. There most be tight rules about how this lenses are assembled and the only difference you'd get would be if the parts were different.

Just think of it this way when honda first open its plant in the Good Old US of A they were better built then the ones made in Japan. So much so that it was chic in Japan to drive a USof A Built one!!!

No complaints with mine, except it's not a Canon "L" ;)
And the zoom ring is backwards compared to all my other lenses.

I've been looking for places that sell this lens (Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR DI) but the only places I've found call it a 'MACRO' lens!? Would this be the same lens or a different version - is this just marketing hype? They've still got the same name Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 XR DI, but append, MACRO, onto the end...

Can anyone help?
Thank you!
Joe

The lens has enough suffixes that would put the most educated man on earth to shame http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif. I bought this lens 1 week back. Some of the extensions on it are SP, AF, XR, DI, LD, Aspherical and Macro!!!!!

And I had started a similar thread before I was convinced - Tamron makes only 1 28-75 f/2.8 lens. Go ahead and buy it.

I am a production engineer and work for a big corp (one of the Dow companies), and to tell you the truth, none of the bigger company that I know of do not outsourcing for have manufactory plans overseas - Mexico, China, Malaysia, India...etc. The well-known companies, unlike the smaller one, will monitor/control those plans (or contract manufactors) very carefully to ensure the quality of products. If you have confident in Tamron, then it should not matter when it is made.
