View Full Version : Image from a friend's wedding...

The following image was taken as a snap with my Powershot S50 at a friend's wedding, on auto settings. I had intended to take my 20D, but was intending to have a few drinks and didn't think it wise.
Looking at all the snaps later on, one in particular stuck in my mind as crying out to be black and white.
I then used PS CS to remove two people from the image, and tidy up the ground of confetti and other detritus. I also used a depth map and plug-in to produce a false depth of field, lifting the couple out of the image, as the auto had used a high aperture setting.
The image was taken in colour and once the levels had been sorted, I used a 100% hue/saturation adjustment layer (set at -100% saturation) about a selective colour adjustment layer. If you are unaware of this method of desaturating an image, it gives you far more tonal control, as it allows you to adjust the Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black levels for each of the colours PS uses, and also for the whites, neutrals and blacks.
The bouquet was then 'painted in' by placing a masked copy of the original (level adjusted) image at the top of the layers and the blend mode set to "color". I often like to leave a hint of colour in black and white images.
Links below and I hope you like the result as much as the couple concerned.

Jax, thats a fantastic shot.
You've gone to a lot of trouble to create this and you should be very proud.
I hope the happy couple appreciate it.
It's a very professional looking shot.

Nice shot by the way!!
As for 1000 agl.
That stands for 1000 ft above ground level....... Soo there are many places all over the world that would qualify.......... If you want an altitude of the earth that would be MSL, mean sea level......

To clarify the location on my profile, I spend most of my time at 1000ft AGL, and I do mean above the ground. My company vehicle is below and should explain....

I also get to play with a Canon 1D mkII, a Nikon D1X and a Nikon F5. Not a bad job.

Beautiful image :D
The only thing that is not perfect for me is that the colour of the flowers is a very subtle hue ... I didn't see immediately that they are in colour vs. the b+w.
Best regards,
Andy

Andy, thank you for the comment, and it is interesting that you made it, because when I first worked the image I did increase the saturation of the bouquet. However the extra colour drew the eye away from the couple, especially when printed. I wanted the focus of the image to be the kiss and the bride's dress, so I removed the extra saturation layer and left it as you see it. The bouquet colours are exactly as they looked on the day.

Lomond, I am indeed. It was my current job that taught me the difference between an f-stop and a traffic stop, although you don't get play too much with the settings when taking images from 500-6000ft. Creativity is also frowned upon, the courts aren't keen on it!
I design in my spare time, and the photography side of things has developed from that. To tell you the truth, it may well take over in the long run, but the ability to us PS CS is a god send, especially when I am just learning about all this photography business. At work we only have one depth of field, the ground.
I take it from your name that you are just north of Glasgow. I was lucky enough to see Runrig play there in 1991. Wow what a concert, I can still feel the shiver down my spine when the first strains of "Loch Lomond" hit my ears....[/reminiscing].

Not bad for a Copper. :) :) :)
My wife is a civil servant and I keep telling her " think of the pension" when she threatens to resign.
I took my Sig from Lomond because I love the area, from the Arrochar Alps to the Trossachs.
I live south of Glasgow. :(
