Will the " Canon Tripod Mounting Ring A (Black)" for 70-200mm 4L?
It's said to only work for a EF 200mm f/2.8L "II"

Any "Canon Tripod Mounting Ring A" (of any colour!) should work on the 70-200/4L, 80-200/2.8L, 200/2.8L, 300/4L (non-IS) and 400/5.6L

Yes - I bought the black one for my 70-200 f4L, and it fits perfectly. Then I bought the 400 f5.6L, and it came with a white one. I swapped them, and the fit is perfect on each.

Very cool! Thanks!! The "black" one is actually cheaper; 89.95 vs. 119.50

I've been thinking of getting a tripot mount for my 70-200mm 4L, but haven't been able to justify the cost. My question is what is the benefit of using a tripod mount for 70-200mm 4L as this lens is not as heavy as the other long zoom?
Thanks.

For me, after trying out my 70-200mm 4L in indoor light situations, I found that I don't hold it steady enough for the slow shutter speeds (with battery grip and 550X flash). I already have a monopod and tripod, so it'll help with slow shutter pics and balance the weight. Outdoors with a decent shutter speed, no problem at all.
Figure it's a lot cheaper than getting the 2.8L IS version...for now.

The tripod ring is not required with the 70-200 f4L, but it does improve the balance. I have discovered one issue - if you use a grip on the 20D (probably others) along with a quick release like the Manfrotto RC2 on the tripod mount, the grip interferes with the release handle. Some have suggested options like turning the QR plate 180 degrees, but be aware of the issue.

Thanks CoolToolGuy for the issue and suggestion. I'll keep that in mind when trying it out. Thanks.

Is there a third party tripod ring? The cost for either one is ridiculous.

This subject has come up many times on this forum, and some have suggested making their own out of a variety of things, including muffler clamps. Search around and you will find the threads. Personally, I can't see risking such a fine piece of glass by wrapping a muffler clamp around the barrel, but to each his own.

I use an old Tamron tripodring... don't know from what lens it came, but it works very well and I paid just a few dollars...
Go search the second hand stores... ! :)
