Hi there,

I've posted this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=769800&highlight=counterfeit) thread some days ago, only to find out that the battery I bought on eBay is indeed counterfeit.

PayPal is asking me to get an unbiased, third-party to evaluate the battery and point why is it not authentic:

To continue with the investigation of your complaint, we must request
documentation to support your claim that the item is not authentic. Please
obtain a document from an unbiased, third-party, such as a dealer,
appraiser, or an organization that is qualified in the area of the item in
question (other than yourself), which clearly identifies the item as not
authentic. The document must specifically state how the item received
differs from an authentic item and must include a detailed explanation of
how the person evaluating the item determined that it is not authentic. If
possible, the document should include a serial number, and must be on
letterhead that includes the name, address, and phone number of the
business or organization so that PayPal may contact them if necessary

Would anybody help me on this? Canon refused to do so... :(

If you have a relationship with a local camera shop try them. Otherwise, send it to Canon. I suspect they will reward you for helping them find counterfeits!

That's ridiculous, paypal will do anything to keep from paying out on a claim.

I would go straight to your credit card company, if possible.

I don't think that is the problem, as they would probably charge it from the seller. Credit Card is not an option I guess, I don't want to create a relationship problem with PayPal. Emailed Canon again seeing if they would do that for me, and I hope they do. That would be sad from their part if they turned their backs on me... :(

how do you know that it is not authentic?

check the thread I've mentioned, the battery has poor-quality printing and typos.

Anybody feels like giving a hand here? Did not hear back from Canon on this... :(

Have them go to this site, which lists a bunch of camera companies and their stand on fakes:

http://www.cipa.jp/battery/index_e.html. Some of the photo examples show the fuzzy print quality that your battery shows.

But with all those typos, how could Paypal be so difficult? Tell them to have one of their native French speaking employees read the back of the fake themselves.

If they don't pay, I would have the credit card company cancel the charge and don't use Paypal again. I'm disturbed to hear about Paypal this way, and it supports my gut reaction to pay with a credit card everytime rather than use them. If Amex or MC were to hear your claim about a conterfeit vendor, they would refund you and cut him off as a client immediately.
