View Full Version : Anyone else have problems cleaning Hoya Pro1 filters?

I've always used Hoya skylight or UV filters on the front of all my lenses and recently I've upgraded all my filters to Hoya Super HMC Pro1 UV filters. To clean them in the past I used a 'Hakuba' lens pen which whilst on a visit to B&H was told they were the best lens pens you could buy? Anyway now when I go to clean these Pro1 filters the lens pen's pad leaves streaks all over the glass and just doesn't seem to clean as smoothly as on previous filters. Trying to remove the streaks has been a real pain and the best I can get it is to just do a bit of heavy breathing and wipe over with a normal lens cloth, usually with a few attempts. I tried using the Eclipse fluid and a Pec pad but it didn't work as well?

I take it the coating on these Pro 1 filters is different which is causing the cleaning of them to be a slightly harder job?

Question - if there are any slight smears left after cleaning will these effect the final image, I'm guessing not!

Thanks.

I have a couple of LensPen cleaners, and found it most difficult to get my Canon UV streak-free. I had to use lens fluid. In the interests of science, I've just used a LensPen on one of my two Pro 1 polarisers and it did a pretty good job. There are some little streaks, but nothing significant.

Maybe it just depends what's making the filter dirty? For some reason the very first thing that's happened when taking two Pro 1 filters out of their cases is that I've managed to put a finger print on them  (I hate the cases they come in). It did take a lot more cleaning to get the prints off, but the LensPen was all I used.
