Could anybody explain the meaning of magnification numbers, especially in Macro lenses? Thanks

Are talking about the 1:3, 1:4, and 1:1
If it is 1:3 then 1/3 life size
If it is 1:1 then life size
If it is 2X then its twice lifesize

A 35mm negative/slide is about 24mm X 36mm or 1" X 1.5" . If your filed of view (what fills the frame,) is the same size then you have life size or 1:1. If 2" X 3" fills the frame, then 1/2 life size and so on.....rough guide.

They use these measurements because photo's are easily enlarged.That means the object size on the film/sensor plane is the only baseline method of measuring a lens closeup magnification
