I didn't think our rhododendron was going to even blossom this year. Boy did it fool me. Here is a couple of close-ups of the buds and a blossom

I've never really seen a single type blossom like this on the shrub before.

Nice capture Sandy and that answers my question as to what kind of flower, as I just posted a shot of the same type of flower, not knowing what it was.

Those are nice shots, Sandy, of a beautiful plant. I miss those since they won't grow down here.

Thanks, Stan and Airedale. Thought I might post another couple the first one is most of the shrub. Trouble is it looks a little blown out. Guess I over compensated for the shadows.

No problem the flowers are lovely, if you want to delete one of them just click on edit and then check the delete button.

beautiful flowers and shots Sandy
over here I see that particular colour growing wild by the side of the road in some places
they are only coming out now.
I have them in a deep red in the back garden and they came out weeks ago
as you rightly say it's unusal to see one blossom growing like in your picture
mostly they are in bunches of three or so together
I saw them growing in Bournmouth in the uk as high as forty feet or more.
maybe higher.
sometimes they have to be cut back a lot if growing in public places
but I think they are just beautiful to come across anywhere
