My Humble nightscapes.

Hi Peeps I'm a compolete noob in thses forums but thought I'd like to introduce some of my work with my Canon 300D.
This is Melbourne looking West along the Yarra river.
Southbank on the left and the docklands area moving further West behind the tall buildings.
The footbridge in the middle is the one in the close up shot.

This is the footbridge that crosses the Yarra heading to Southbank.
From the first picture the picture is taken from the left hand side.

Just the lens that came with the camera the 18-55 zoom.
Both were taken at dusk with a 4 sec shutter and f11 in order to catch all the minute details.
This was my first attempt with this camera with a slow shutter and resting on a wall to keep it steady.

Thanks for sharing. After a 2nd view, I found that the dark sky of the 1st pic contrasts with the lights from the building very well. I think I would also crop out the bottom part of the 1st one, but it's just me.

I just posted it as I took it.
You can see the wall in that shot which does detract from the viewing a touch.

So a 4sec shutter and F11 let more light into the camera altogether? So two lights or images that are say 2 seconds apart would show in the same shot?

As for a longer shutter speed , it makes up for a smaller aperture.
the smaller aperture means you get more objects in focus but in order to allow more light in you have to allow longer shutter speeds.
The meter on the camera set in manual mode lets you know the optimal exposure.
Best to bracket exposures in 3's. one stop on underexposure one on the "correct" setting the other on over exposure by one stop.
That way you can see what works best as I believe the canon tends to underexpose a touch.

the first one really is phenominal... the clouds are just brilliant and the lights are just so vivid... the intersting thing in image one is a blue band of light across the river center of image that doesnt seem to have a source... or did i miss it? just thought it was an interesting aspect...

either way glorious image, and same as Leo a crop of the bottom would be nice but you already know that (btw great use of wall for tripod ;) gotta use whatever you can)

The blue lights are reflections off two buildings.
The one on the left is from the tallest building (rialto towers) which has neon blue lights on the top (Not clear in that picture) and the other blue lights actually come off the red/pink building which actually has blue lights where the writing is. I think the 4 sec exposure may have washed the blue out a touch from the tops of the buildings, but because the river was ripply the camera maintained the blue colours in their right colours. Notice the pale green light which is a reflection off the other tall building with the greenish writing on the top.
I guess i was lucky because it was a grey day and the sunset was non existent when it came to colours yet the clouds broke and you see the end result about 15 minutes after sunset.

Great shots on both. Only thing I'd change is to crop out the blurred part of the wall you rested on (I think?) and it'd be a framer :D Nice job.
