I was in the Smoky Mountains for a few days last week and noticed quite a few people carrying their tripod with the camera on the head. They didn't have on a backpack. I would never do that for fear that it might slip and fall to the ground. I always detach the camera and put it in my camera bag then carry the tripod while hiking. Which do you do?

Routinely carry the tripod on one shoulder with the camera on it...
I prefer to do so with the camera in front of me so I can make sure I don't ram it into anything but with the release locked, it's not going anywhere.

I carry with camera on all the time, I loop the strap around my upper arm for a safety.

I first check that everything is secure and only carry for short distances.

No. That is why you put a RRS QR lever clamp on your ballhead.

All the time but, I use a very secure Arca Compatible Quick Release on a good ball head.

Yes, I do. I always like to have the strap wrapped around my hand or arm though, just in case.
If you have a good ballhead and plates, it's no biggie.

i grab the camera strap and sling it over my head so just in case the QR releases or the tripod head screw breaks, my camera won't fall to the ground.

I wrap pipe insulation foam around the legs to soften the load. (like the fellow on the right in Eds photo above)

Been doing it from day 1. Every QR plate I have ever used has a lock on it. I do check the tightness of the screw on the bottom occasionally though, but it can't really fall off if the lock is set.

I have a Markins Q3T ballhead and RRS lever clamp, but still don't carry it on my shoulder. I will hold it upright with the camera attached if I'm moving for a different shot, but not very far.
