How do you shoot a black Harley in the Shade with a bright sky in the background? Had this this past week and I couldn't get it. Nothing but flashing black on my LCD.

Use partial metering, point the centre of the viewfinder at the harley, hit the * key, then take the photo. The sky will be completely blown out (ie white) but that doesn't matter. If you have a tripod you could take two shots, one exposed for the bike, one for the sky, and combine them in photoshop to make a single good photo.

Reflectors - redirect the available light to serve as your source.

Use partial metering, point the centre of the viewfinder at the harley, hit the * key, then take the photo. Or learn how to transfer the readings from the meter to an "M" setting & you won't have to screw around with the * for every shot taken from the same angle. ;-)

Thank you all, I will try that.

Stick the camera on a tripod, take two shots, one with the harley correctly exposed, one with the sky. Then slap 'em together in photoshop.

There's another "fix" too, & that's to just throw away the background! Once you get used to working with PS or PSE, it really doesn't take more than a half-hour to get something simple like these: ;)
