This is my first post and the pictures are from the first day with my new 350D (EF-S 18-55mm kit lens). Any advice/comments are appreciated.
Both were ISO400 1/200 B/W parameter with Vivitar 285HV bounced off the (white) ceiling.
The first was f5.6 at 31mm and second f16 at 28mm.
His name is Jasper.
The only post processing was an attempt at levels and resizing. Also, I think I need to calibrate my screen, so let me know if the brightness/contrast is off.

Expose for Jaspers face, because the expressions he makes are good to have stand out.

I agree for #2. The lighting is just poor on #1.

In this case, bouncing off the ceiling doesn't work 'cause you're so close to Jasper that you have the equivalent of high-noon sunlight. His coat looks good, but see how his eyes are in shadow? Back off, or if you must shoot close, then try this trick:

wow thanks for all the advice guys. I'll have to tray that index card, and with the new lens I got I'll be able to back WAY off.

Number one breaks the first rule of dog shooting - be at eye level. OK, I know rules are meant to be broken, but play by them to start with then you will learn when yo bend and break them :)
Number two - Don't back off too far. To be honest I think you have got everything apart from the lighting spot on. You do need fill flash, but maybe you could try it with the flash on the camera set at various setting between -1 and -2 FEC. And external flash with bounce card would be good, even an external without bounce card will help, but set FEC to be at least a stop under. Jaspers expression is priceless and you definitly want to capture it.
You could also try moving in a little, and filling the frame with his face - that would make a truly superb photo. I still suggest fill flash and give the onboard flash a go, it meand you can practise more today :) :)
