Been looking for an external HDD and a friend suggested an iomega. Had a bad experience with iomega's "click of death" if any remember those.

So does this company make good quality and reliable HDDs.

Thanks

Forgot to ask, do all external HDDs need a power source, or some do and some don't. It's more convenient if they get the power from the PC/laptop.

I have never had any harddisks from iomega so I can't say anything about those.

I usually buy Maxtor or Western Digital. But all harddisks die eventually its just a matter of time and when the time comes You just have to be sure You are prepared in the form of backups.

Yes there are some of the small portable ones that can draw the power from the usb cable. Sorry I don't remember brands or model names.

Thanks Tommy,

My friend (who's in IT) suggested either an iomega or a Maxtor. And btw, he said exactly what you said (about breaking down in the future).

I bought a 160Gb Iomega external drive almost a year ago. I haven't had any problems with it. The drive itself is a Western Digital. Iomega just puts it in a case with their name on it. It uses its own power source.

Thanks Thomas, that's good information.

I use the Maxtor Onetouch II 300GB, 16mb cache, 7200 rpm.

This is my back up drive for photos and I also use it to capture video.
I find it faster than my internals drives ( maybe the 16mb cache ).
Firewire or USB.

I'm considering another, it's so good.

Thanks Cameron,

Funny you mention this HDD. When I asked my friend for his recommendation he said either the iomega or the Maxtor you suggested. Chose the iomega because it's cheaper.

I have a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive in a USB case, it runs purely from USB power. Don't get a cheap enclosure, the build quality's not so good, and neither is the performance - they go slower than the better cases.

Thanks Tim. I'm actually looking for an HDD for a laptop (it doesn't have to be laptop specific). Can you give your recommendation.

Thanks

I've used Iomega products for years. The last is a 160 gb HDD. It gets power from the usb cable and works well. No problems.

I have just ditched my 250GB Iomega external USB/firewire HDD because the cooling fan noise is unacceptably high. The LaCie air cooled model (USB only) that replaced it is lovely and quiet.

Both have external power supplys.

Just bought & installed that iomega 250 GB HDD. Do I need to format it before using it. And is it necessary to partition the drive. I'm using XP Pro.

Thanks

Yes usually You need to format a new harddisk. I don't know this particular product so maybe it is delivered formatted.

As an external harddisk I would not partition it unless You want to keep certain data seperate.

Thanks Tommy. It's working fine so I'll keep it as it is.

Have another question and I tried to find the answer in their site but couldn't find anything. It's really a very silly question, so maybe that's why there was no answer. When powering the PC/laptop off, do you have to turn the drive off first :o

After windows have shutdown.

Or You should use the safe removal of drive to make sure all data has been written then You can shut off the drive. (You know the icon that appears when You plugin a removable drive)

Thanks again Tommy, that's what I was looking for.
