I actually did that same thing to one of my images! Same timing, ball right where the face should have been. I drew a smiley face on it, printed it, and gave it to the girl. She laughed so hard and got such a kick out of it!

It happens often in wildlife photography. I have a friend who, with his camera in his lap, observed a great white shark breach in the Atlantic Ocean. He could only have gotten that shot if he had the camera aimed at the exact position at the moment it happened. For that he would have needed ESP. Other times you're just too stunned by what you're witnessing to react in time. I once saw a bald eagle chase a yearling deer into a frozen river. The hired photographer on board didn't get the shot either. We all have a mental list of the ones that got away. At least in sports one can anticipate somewhat.

Oh thank you SOOO much for this one! I dumped the picture but I missed my shot of an owl. I had been "hunting" for one for years. The night before I had used the mirror lock up to shoot the full moon. I had an owl fly right in front of me and perch, in PERFECT light. But in mirror lock up my camera was useless, and it took me a minute tolong to figure out what was wrong and I totlay missed the shot. A week later did the same thing but had no card in the camera. So again, thanks for posting these. I now know it just isn't my camera that is messed up! haha

Right after I got my first dslr (Rebel) I was on my way to Target to print out some photos. Came across a car on fire in the middle of the road so I jumped out and shot away for a good 10 minutes before the fire department shooed me away. Got back in my car and went to Target thinking about all the great shots I got... until I realized the CF card was in my pocket the whole time. DOH!

The situation sounds too familiar. It's Murphy's Law that something will always screw up a great opportunity.
