View Full Version : G11 for Real Estate Photography?

I'm thinking about a G11, and also thinking about Real Estate Photography. I know that it would be advantageous to have wide angle ability in small rooms. Do you think I could push this camera into service?
What other equipment should I have available for this type of photography (tripod, off-camera flash...)?

I don't think the lens goes wide enough - equivalent of 28 mm on a full frame dSLR. I shot some interior with my 24-105L and it was not wide enough, so I got the 16-35L to get the job done.

get a nice tripod set up that rotates around the nodal point and get a 430ex on that thing.
It should work for 2/3 shot panos.

CyberPet - that is what I thought. I want to get into certain types of photography - but I can't afford to jump into a good "long term" dslr. I have to decide whether to go with used older technology (40d) or newer, less expensive albiet cool - (g11). I also have to keep in mind that I need something my wife can operate - so I'm going with the g11, and do what I can to prove my skills with that.
cccc - I like the idea of doing half a room per shot, and maybe side by side would work. I had started another thread a while back about using a 430ex on a g11, and we all had a good laugh at how big it will look on top of the camera - but I think it would be a great idea.

Scott, you should be able to get hold of a used 5D (first version) for a fairly good price, and find a nice wide angle or wide angle zoom with at least 16-17 mm on the widest end. Or go with the 40D and buy the Canon 10-22 mm zoom lens. That should work great!

As others have said, the G11 (at 28mme) is not wide enough and there are no add-ons for getting wider. Also, you'll soon tire of stitching multiple shots.
A G9 or G6, G5, G3 could be made somewhat (but often not enough) wider than the G10 or G11 by adding the wide angle converter as shown here, http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2009/08/g9-wide-angle-converter-lens.html , but the combination is awkward.

True, but if I start getting tired it means I'm bringing in a few bucks, and can save up for a new primary which can do more for me. If I don't get tired of it, it's because I'm not getting any income from it, and I still have a great camera in the G11.
Thanks all for feedback!

Most real estate photography is high volume/low dollar stuff, and reproduced so small that you don't need a super high pixel count. Making panos takes way too much post-processing time to be profitable. Get a decent used DSLR like a 20D or 40D, a wide angle zoom and a good tripod.

I encourage you to purchase a powerful flash as well, as many interior shots won't have enough light for a shot with a relatively small aperture.

I had another thread going a while back asking about using a large flash on a g11 because of this interest. I now have to decide whether to go with my gut and get a g11, and forget real estate photography, or go with my brain and get a 40, wide angle lens, tripod, and powerful flash and pursue real estate photography. I happen to do a lot of web work for my employer, and have often thought about doing that on the side - with the imaging from the digital camera... who you gonna trust, your gut, or your brain. and why is the answer gut - that's counter-intuitive - wait - that's the brain talking... thanks all.
