If you're shooting in the auto mode (green box), the flash will pop up automatically if the camera determines there isn't sufficient light. If you were shooting in P, Fv, Tv, or M, it shouldn't happen unless you deploy the flash manually. It that's the case, then it sounds like you have a problem.
It would be helpful to know what your setting were.

I allway shoot in AV mode and had plenty of light to play with. I've used this setup for a year now and never had this happen. Ha cap locks gone!!
Thanks Dave, UK.

maybe the 'flash-popup-button' is broken
I think you will have to send it in for repair

Have you tried it with another lens?

Until you get it fixed, mounting an external flash should keep the built-in flash from popping up.

You can get your battery grip from Canoga Camera. Good place to do business as well.:)

Well, there are lots of places that have them in stock. But I get a feeling that B&H is getting the modified ones now. Yes, I'm being paranoid. That's just me :p

I'm not sure how this thread turned into a discussion of battery grips. Regardless, I'm not aware of any required modifications to the 10D grip (BG-ED3, I seem to recall). There were problems with the 20D grip.

Will try out a few other lenes this week end to see how the 10D flash performs. I did try holding down the pop up flash at the time of taking my shots but it insited on trying to pop up and sounded like a machine gun going off, not what you want when taking wildlife photos.
Many thanks

if you force the flash to stay shut the camera will throw an error code.
check the exif on the shots that you think were destroyed to make sure that the camera was in fact set to Av/Tv/M/P (where the flash will only fire if you manually deploy it).

Lenses shouldn't make a difference..
If you use the camera in AUTO mode (The green square or any of the 'pictures'. then the flash WILL pop up when the camera thinks it needs it.. In the auto modes ALL you can do is press the shutter release.. You have no access to the camera functions.
If the flash is popping up when you don't want it to in P, Av, Tv, M or ADep modes, then you need to send the camera in for service.. In these modes, it should only pop up when you activate it.

Try turning the camera off, removing the lens and battery. Let it sit for 15 minutes and then put it back together again. A friend of mine had this problem once and that did the trick.
