interesting...although just because there is a patent on the idea, dosen't mean that it will be produced. Would be cool though!

That would indeed be nice. Could be good on APS-H
12-24 would be better

I think they should do a 12-24 just to put on above Nikon  too

Canon already has a hand in creating a 14mm optic and a 24mm optic.
Marrying that range makes more sense I think.

From looking over the patent document, it seems that there are 4 designs; 2 seem to be zooms and the other 2 appear to be primes.

Hmm, that would be nice. I just don't think my Visa would appreciate it that much if it comes out.
I don't imagine it would be Canon's cheapest L.. I assume it would have a red ring..

A 14-24 or 12-24 would be ideal for this type of lens if ever made by Canon. I'd ditch my 16-35 II in a heartbeat. :) The price tag will definitely be around Nikon's 14-24. Give or take a few hundred. :)

While I would like to see a new f/2.8 zoom, maybe there will be a new f/4 zoom. I could definately go for something like that as well.

If you compare the diagrams with the 14-24G cutaway on KR's site, you'll see the diagrams have a number of additional elements, so I'm expecting some hefty price tags if these designs come to fruition.

I'd be ditching my 16-35II as well.

And I'd pick up one of your used 16-35Ls on the cheap. :D

A constant f/4 is doable in my books. :) Although, Canon would have to make it 2.8 to keep it king of the UWA zooms. :)

I wouldn't ditch my 16-35 for it. 35mm is too important for indoor stuff and 14mm is overkill at the wide end a lot of the time.
THOUGH I might buy one for ultra wide stuff if it was as good as the Nikon. I just would keep the 16-35 for event work as sometimes you need the 35mm end.
12-24 (usable on FF of course) would be awesome (again if the sharpness in the corners was up thar with the Nikon.
I for one am not one to say the 16-35 sucks as some are wont to do. I think it's an awesome lens. It can also easily use polarizers unlike the nikon, which makes it gooood. I have used the Nikon too. It's range in the long end is limiting of course, but you don't use that lens for the long end.
PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN:

Not necessarily, if it was a constant f/4, Sharper than the Nikkor, and substantially cheaper, it could become king of the UWAs ;)
-edit- And whats wrong with Canon copying the Sigma design for filter mounting?

You guys are all getting excited and then it is going to be like a new EFS kit lens! :)

I have no problem with Canon copying the same design as Sigma. :)

That wasn't directed at you, But Sigma's 12-24 CAN use filters from 16mm+ through use of a cool lenscap system...
Sure, no filters at 14mm, but 16mm+ with filters with the option to go to 14 would make a lot of people very happy
I just am wondering why nowone else has done this

Perhaps it's Patented?

Maybe it'll be a constant f/3.5

I dunno about Canon, But Nikon's patents have been pretty telling about upcoming products [correctly predicting the 85mm f/3.5 VR Macro for instance]

Someone, perhaps Canon or possibly just a prankster, has had "Canon EOS 3D" product code (UPC) has been reserved for several years now.
Is it useful for prediction? Dunno.... But, there was also "Canon EOS 7D".
Haven't looked lately to see if there are any interesting lens UPCs registered.
I suspect Canon will be slow to put out a 14-24/2.8. They intro'd the 14/2.8 II prime just a short time before Nikon broadsided them with the zoom announcement. Canon would probably try to avoid shooting themselves in the foot and would wait until they sold down stocks of 14/2.8 II, before they'd want to roll out a zoom in direct competition with it. It's anyone's guess how large a production run of the 14mm was done, or how fast stock is depleting.
Most manufacturers produce lenses in bigger batches, every so often, stocking up their shelves. They then retool to make completely different models. R&D probably has stuff in the works, some of which might be years in the works before it gets rolled out, depending on the stocks of old lenses (both at Canon and in their distribution/retail pipeline), as well as competitive pressures, market demand, etc.
