The Rosette Nebula (NGC2237)
400mm @ f/5 26 x 2 minutes (52 minutes total exposure time)
Unmodified Canon 50D

This is uncropped...the Skywatcher equinox 80 + Televue flattener again just gives a perfectly flat field all the way across the sensor. Perfect combination as far as I'm concerned.

PS. Hope nobody feels I'm spamming the board! I'm just finally getting to look at some of the data I captured a few weeks ago, and a surprising number of the images came out well.

You simply amaze me jmx !! This is georgous and is gonna be my desktop for a while :) . Hope you don't mind ? The colors are fantastic ! This scope is also amazing ! I wish i had one . makes me want to sell my Celestron C8 OTA and buy one of these . I've always wanted a refractor of this quality but so far all i have a SV AT1010 original called the Tank .

You're producing some great quality work, the more the merrier I say. :D

You're going to knock people off their seats when you get to the 3 hour mark on objects like this. Excellent image.

The TV flattener is doing a fantastic job with your scope. It's nice to get those sub exposures up on screen and see those nice round stars at the edge. The TAK flattener for the Sky 90 woks great as well. I'm still in need of a good one that will work with my little TAK FS-60C.

Thanks guys.

Celestron, I do love this little 80mm scope. For $600, its hard to beat. It may convince me to stay away from reflectors from now on actually.

Nighthound, next time I go out I'll try and do 2-3 hours on a subject for once. Hopefully I'll see the benefits. So far it's been hard to justify shooting more than an hour on something as the results seem to be coming out just fine on the somewhat bright targets I've been shooting.

Anyway, I think this Rosette Nebula is one of my favorites. I may revisit this one in a month or two and try to give it some more time.

I couldn't agree more, you're posting some really excellent images. I'm just looking forward to seeing what you can do with 3 times the exposure, it'll rock.

I see you're sticking around the 2 minute mark on your sub exposures, is that due to light pollution, mount limits or all of the above? Just curious.

Well, 2 months ago I'd never guided before and I was limited to 30 or 60 second subs. At 60 sec, i'd be throwing away nearly 50% of my data. This was on my CG5. I finally got a guider, and just recently got a CGEM, so I'm slowly working my way up to longer exposures.

I've noticed that even with guiding, my test 5 minute exposure shots are blurrier. The guider is still doing work, and that inevitably ends up with blurring. Also over the course of an hour, my image still drifts about 15-20 pixels total, even with guiding (and thats at 400mm focal length). I assume that drift will be negligible at 5 minutes, but again, it'll still give me a blurrier end result.

I'm pretty sure im fairly nicely aligned, as I can still shoot and get plenty of good subs with no autoguider (altho some get thrown out).

Anyway, I'll go for 3 minutes next time I'm out and see how that goes. Baby steps. I only get to shoot 1 night a month, and I'd hate to come home empty handed.

Jmx...you did inspire me! Today, I ordered the Celestron C6-NGT Advanced Series of scopes with the CG-5GT Goto mount. I know you said you didn't like the mount very much, but it's still much better than my present CG-4 with dual motor drives. Of course, the deciding factor was the price which was very good at $799. So now I will have that cheap 6" reflector on a good tracking mount that I can later on, mount a Skywatcher EQ 80 APO on.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info on your setup.

Greg, thats awesome. The mount isnt bad, especially once you get the EQ80 at a shorter focal length later on. At 750mm you'll end up throwing away shots, but as long as you're out there taking photos for hours you should get enough "good" data to make a shot.

I took this shot with that exact setup, no "guiding", no nothing. Just a C6N-GT and nothing more:

I think you'll like it, and if nothing else its a great setup to learn about all the technical challenges this hobby has.

PS, on my website, every shot from "July" and earlier is with the C6N. The july shots use autoguiding, all the earlier shots do not.

Thanks, I do look forward to doing images like the above one (which is fantastic I might add). As I learn, I will begin to save for the next item...autoguider or Equinox?
