Do you know how to force a flash while using the basic modes?
I was outside this weekend shooting close-ups of my daughter while under partial shadows. I wanted to force a flash to eliminate some of the shadows. Had to switch to manual to get the flash to go off.

As far as I can tell, it's not possible to force the built-in flash to fire while using a basic mode. You need to be in a creative mode, in which case pushing the lightning symbol will pop up the flash. Alternatively, using an external flash will work.

It seems to me that you have failed to understand the entire point of the basic modes. The basic modes are the automated ones where the camera makes the decisions. If you want to use your judgement instead of the cameras then there are the P, Av, Tv and M modes available. If you want to trust the camera to decide on what's best then use the basic modes, but don't complain that the camera decides not to use the flash.
I never use the basic modes but P, Tv, Av and M all have their uses.

Put on program(P) if you are going to use the flash. The flash will compensate for your exposure settings. That's what P is there for.

I don't thing NF was complaining about his camera Mark but rather he was asking a legitimate question about how best to use it, so let's not be too hard on him.
Incidentally, I've just had a look at your site and enjoyed your pictures.
Best wishes, David :) :) Smiles from the UK.

I am glad you enjoyed my pics, that is what they are there for.
I was not trying to be hard on NF, just pointing out the different philosophy on basic vs creative modes. Essentially the creative modes are there when you want more creative control, the basic modes are very limiting as NF has found. My advice stands - switch the camera from basic to creative modes and have fun learning about how to get the best out of the settings available.
