Just musing that now I have a reversing ring which I can use with a couple of old FD lenses, and having mocked up a softlight snoot/box that fits over an old flashgun I had lying around, I am starting to achieve some half decent results when attempting macro.

To say that the bug has well and truly bitten (forgive the pun) is a bit of an understatement. The problem is that I look at the results you guys are getting and my thoughts are already turning to a proper macro lens, dedicated TTL flash system etc.

My wife is gonna kill me!

Just practice a lot with what you have until you feel limited by it - welcome to the addiction !

Good advice Brian. I was out in the garden most of yesterday afternoon. I'm starting to get strange looks from the neighbours! :D

Any samples of your results?

These were probably the best of the bunch.

I also found a really nice looking spider, but I only managed a couple of shots before it disappeared back in it's hole, and the shots I did get weren't particularly good. I'd love to get another go at it, as I've never seen one like it before, and I'm curious to know what it was exactly.
