I'll be shooting this in a few hours. Any suggestions or ideas for such a venue? Can't say I've ever tried shooting something with this lighting atmosphere before.

I'll have a tripod and can play around I guess....just thought I'd touch base here as well.

Thanks

Flash or B&W is what I would try.

How did it go? Curious to see what you came up with.

Yes...me too! I'd love to see your results. :D

I actually took very few shots. They gym they performed in, was just not ideal for what they did. I don't think they had as many lights as they thought they would need. In other words, it was a bust.

I tried a few flash shots, but it defeated the effect. I'll attach on quick copy of one image to show you how little there was to capture. I guess the reflection on the floor was ok...but I was not thrilled with the rally.

Too bad.

The reflection is kinda cool though. I tried some black light stuff on my front porch for Halloween yesterday, it takes a LOT of lights to get that roller-rink effect. I didn't have enough either.

You also need the right colors for the blk lights to reflect off of. You know, the hot orange, neon green, pink, and electric blue kind of thing.

Any type of flash or added lighting will only screw up the blacklight effect. My suggestion would be to just bump your ISO until you can get a sufficient shutter to freeze the action you're going for, and the faster the lens the better. I've never shot fast moving subjects under blacklight, but I've shot some static and slow moving objects and this technique seemed to work pretty good.

I'm guessing PhotoPhil was meaning "Flash" as white balance setting... and not suggesting you actually use a flash (which as you found out kills any hope of getting a blacklight "glow").

Now somehow inventing/modifying a strobe to use a blacklight bulb... that would be cool!

I would think that you could also create some interesting photos by slowing the shutter speeds and allowing the subjects to blur through motion, although I haven't shot a black light event myself so I can't say that from experience.

I agree. In fact, that was my original plan, hence bringing the tripod. But it seemed that the only thing that stood out was the jersey's and that didn't look great blurred.

oh well...live and learn

What exactly were they attempting to do? To get the effect I was considering would require significant movement eg flips, cartwheels, excessive dancing, etc.
