Hi,

My 29 year old daughter is pondering a new camera with these two in mind:

PowerShot G11

Rebel XS

She's not into DSLR's with her old set up, Panasonic point and shoot.....

What would you tell here?

Those are her choices? One's a dslr. But put the XS on the green window and a kit lens with IS, it ain't much different from a P&S. Better prints, however.

What is her interest level in photography and how much effort is she going to put into learning how to work a camera?

For that matter, can you give any insight as to how the field of umpteen billion cameras was whittled down to these two? They are very different.

Unless she is very serious about photography and learning about exposure etc... I would get her the g11.

Why not the S90? I mean the G11 is for more serious shooters. The S90 might be a better fit.

I'd say the DSLR for sure

I Vote G11

If she doesn't want to think about what she's doing, she doesn't have to.

BUT, if she gets curious and wants to have more creative control, she can have it (as opposed to the S90 .. not the XS)

Either a G11 or if she wants a smaller and more slick looking camera, the s90.

If she is serious about photography better a reflex.
If not better a small compact camera with a nice color.

G11 or S90. Both excellent cameras and open up the world of exposure control without the hassle of bulkier gear. If she gets into it, then DSLR next time round or trade up.

x2 on the G11 or S90. Heck if they were cheaper I wouldn't mind having one myself (I just got a little SD700IS). If she doesn't show any signs of wanting to learn DSLRs (does she like to play with yours??) then it would be more of a hassle then anything and she would get better PICTURES with the P&S.

Hello,

Thanks for your input, she's 1200 miles away so I mentioned she needs to try these two out at a camera shop and see what they are like in person.

I also summarized your comments for her.

best little camera I ever had is my g10, but the manual is almost a cm. thick! I love it, but a newbie is going to need a little real world assistance to know wich features to turn on and wich to turn off to even get the most out of the green box. It is small, but a bigger low end dslr is going to be much less intimidating to a green box user.
