As promised, here are the first pics of our newborn calf just a couple of minutes after delivery. Momma sought out the most inaccessible place on our property to give birth, so blame her for the poor quality of the pics.:D Born at 3:15 p.m. CDT it was quite an event. After watching for the better part of the day, and having both video and still cameras at the ready, momma decided at the last moment to move somewhere else. So, with birth already in progress, off she went  and by the time we had gathered up the camera gear and found her new spot, she had just dropped the calf. I cleared its airway and right away it began to respond. Although this is her first calf, momma was very dedicated to it and patiently stood still while it found first milk. Whew!!! That was a great relief.

Second pic is where she hid him after we moved away and gave them some space.

More pics later after momma and baby do some more bonding.

Holy cow!! No pun intended LOL Mama didn't have a problem with you being that close? If I were to see an animal giving birth I would be way way back thinking mama may not like my presense. Than again, Can you tell I'm a city boy LOL

Raising these cattle is just a hobby for me, I only have four and I work with them to keep them gentle. Not only did momma not have a problem with me being close, she also let me walk up to her in the pasture and strip her teats to make sure she was giving milk. My Black Angus bull will also approach me in the pasture (or anywhere else) so I can give his head a good scratching. I watch him though, because they can be very tempermental.(And he's getting to be rather large.) I never let him behind me. By the way, this calf is a bull calf.
