I've shot this group a few times with the same personnel. Very good show and pretty happy seeming crew.

I remember them well from their most recent show here... Great showmanship from the entire band... #8 is especially a super capture.

Agree, #8 is great indeed. Just a quick question, how many shots do you normally take at these shows?

Dwight can answer that question... Though I know the answer cause he's asked that often...

I usually shot RAW and bracketed in sets of three shots... shooting the length of the entire show, I would take between 700 and 1200 pics... (I'm taking a break from shows for a while).;)

I'll answer your question but first I have to say that I, like John, take a lot for the few I keep because I abhor the concept of percentage of keepers that some people seemed concerned about so I hope that's not where you were going. :-) So, since John and I shoot the same style, I shoot about what he does which comes out to about 200-300 a song, depending on the song, so about 600 frames. But these are bracketed, three exposures 1.3 stops apart (I used to do 1 stop apart) in RAW, so generally it's like shooting 1/3 the number of shots. I'm a great believer that that the last frame you allowed to shoot should be the one that fills your card ... although this is a bit tough for me since normally have 16GB cards in both bodies!

For big names, there is usually a two or three song shooting limit. But this is misleading since some songs can go on for fifteen minutes. I had a two song limit on a recent concert where I simply stopped shooting before the second song was over because I'd gotten every conceivable thing I could want! OTOH, Melissa Etheridge, who I just shot, was a one song limit and I got very few keepers although I shot a fair number for one song.

My last word on the subject: You only need one! But getting 'The One' is the big trick!

Please feel free to ask anything ... particularly if I didn't answer your question to your satisfaction ... knowledge shared is knowledge multiplied!

Thanks for the answer and the info. The reason for my asking was just a curiosity question to see if you shot around the same number of shots that we(2 of us shooting at the same time) have shot at a few shows. From yours and John's answer it seems that both of you do shoot a lot of shots to make sure you get what you are after, which to me is the right way to do it and not worry about the keeper rate as so many people do.
Thanks again for the answer and info.

A lot of these look too "cool" to me as in they have a lot of blues and purples in them. I'd adjust the WB some on all of them.

They reflect the lighting that the LD spent hours setting up and was preferred by the band. I rarely correct the white balance of concert images but it is the case that the follow spots are daylight and appear somewhat cool unless purposely gelled.

Nice series of the great CCR band.
Thanks!

Great shots as always. Never understood people concerned about keeper ratios unless shooting on film, card space is free, but I always keep a backup card in case I fill it up and something happens later that you need to capture.

Love #8. I think I need to start drumming so I can get arms and chest that you can see in #7.

Thanks! Lots of big cards ... I'm starting to think about 32GB cards, but the UDMA versions are really expensive, sigh.

Thank you ... but no money ... they asked for a CD of these photographs via our talent buyer but when I said it would cost $200 for me to pull them up from archive, burn to CD and FedEx they never responded! They said it was for non-commercial use and offered a photocredit, but what value is a photocredit if they aren't used commercially? LOL. Anyway, I would have wanted a license fee if used commercially, dependent on use. And those who aren't happy to pay up front aren't happy to pay, ever!

Strangely, CCR and I are back at negotiations ... I'm asking for a pittance to provide 600 pixel images so they can see them. I'm not sure what's going on but I expect if they just disappear again I will ignore future queries. As I tell the newbies, if they don't want to pay up front it is because they don't want to pay at all. And every group that has asked for things over and over has never paid for anything.

Well, Stu has wandered off into the ether again and not responded to my latest reply so I think I'm done and will not be responding again unless the question is, "Where do we send the money?"

Wow what a great series. They are all very sharp, and the lighting is great.

Too bad about you getting the runaround, If I were them I'd be happy to pay for these. Maybe these guys aren't raking in the money like they used to, but I'm sure they aren't doing too badly. Seems a little lame that they would gawk over $200

I see a casino watermark in the corner of the first so I imagine you got paid for that one. So I guess all is not lost?

DwightMcCann

Crimson, thank you. I expect that at the rate of doing 100 concerts a year (according to Wikipedia) for pay that it is fair to assume that $200 isn't going to be a burden.

It is certainly the case that the casino contracts with me to photograph their events. But without even talking about my ownership of the copyright to the images, the "normal" business of photography where you are paid by the usage of your work, preferably numerous times, or the concept of stock photography, I was only asking for the $200 to pay for my time to locate the images from three concerts in my archives, retrieve them, create 600 pixel versions of them, burn the DVD and ship them ... I charge the casino at this rate when they ask me to retrieve images and provide them because they find this more convenient than searching through the DVDs I provide when they want something. But I have found that more than a majority of bands will expend a lot of effort to get images for free and will be very abusive if they don't get them. Tom Jones complained to the casino when I refused to give them images for free for their commercial use. It does not appear to be a problem of finances. LOL.

I guess the bigger you get the more self entitled you get.

Well, it's like the Emperor's clothes ... many entertainers are constantly surrounded by people who worship them, buffer them from reality and act as though they are entitled to anything they can fantasize. The same idea as spoiled children. Often their entire entourage also feels entitled and make demands of their own based on their association with the talent. Unfortunately, I am not a "music person" and am singularly unimpressed by most bands/acts/performers ... at concerts, as soon as I can no longer shoot, due to their rules, I go home to be with my wife and daughter, with whom I am very impressed! LOL. So, the idea of getting images published on their websites for photocredit has absolutely no appeal to me at all. I think this often is such a surprise to promoters that they can't adjust. Remember, the people wanting all these photographs are the same ones saying, "You can only shoot the first three songs!" D'oh!
