Attended my first off road racing event today. Came across this website by fluke, and just happened there was an event a few hours later the next morning. So I decided to check it out.

What great fun it was! :)

Here is the scene, just after the racing, 360 degree Panoramic

Sometimes felt like I was too close to the action.
Was standing 2-10 metres from most the vehicles going past at 100+km/h, on uneven terrain.

Settings were mostly, 20D, with 17-40L as I was so close, and TV mode, 1/160th approx. Although I can do 1/100 and less at 300mm at long distance, I found it near impossible to get anything decent less than 1/125th at such close range. Obviously the car physical size in the frame would vary a lot, which creates a single sharp point on image, and everything else is blurred.

Was so close to the road in this shot, and chose a very high shutter speed of 1/1600th to freeze everything including the background. Wanted to show the strange blue sky. (It's been raining a lot the last week, and even just a few minutes before hand)

Race winner, going at a ridiculous speed.

Co driver trying out the new hand air brake.
(Also note, shooting through a tree, just past the jump at this point)
That tree just happened to get ripped apart with a tremendous crash. Luckily I wasn't nearby at the time.
