I love this lens, and I'm actually thinking about selling it and buying the older C/Y or Rollei Zeiss 35 f1.4. Anyone want a mint 35/2? hehe.

I hope the rumors are true and Zeiss announces a ZE 1.4/35 distagon.

I heard it too. The real question is this..will is exhibit focus shift issues as the 50/1.4 ZE?
Mind you the price may be prohibitive. It may be twice the 35/2...ouch!

No focus shift problems with the older version at least. And yes, it will be relatively expensive. It has already been listed by a couple of resellers and the price will probably be about $2300.

http://nikonrumors.com/2010/08/02/zeiss-to-release-distagon-zf-1-435-zf-2-in-few-weeks.aspx

However, if it is as good as the old version, it will be fantastic and the price justified.

bkdc

The old C/Y and Rollei 1.4/35 Zeiss had a floating lens element and did not exhibit focus shift. At this focal length, I'll happily give up auto-focus for the image quality that's expected.

I wonder if there's a bigger market for Zeiss lenses among Nikon users than among Canon users. Why are they rolling it out for Nikon first?

That's a very good question. A Zeiss guy told me that Canon ZE mount outsells Nikon ZF mount by a factor of 10...

I don't know, but if Sony does something extraordinary with new a body release and busts out some fast AF Zeiss primes to boot...I would be reconsidering which ship I sailed on. I love MF, don't get me wrong. I'm a dRF shooter unless shooting professionally but AF Carl Zeiss glass with MF override plus a body with resolving power to do it justice...

Sorry, I think I drooled a little.

dRF?

I've stated - Sony has an exclusive with Zeiss for AF Primes and Zooms right now... :(

I've seen some people get the Sony FF camera - supposedly a great value for one...

dRF = digital rangefinder

Also, I'm fully aware of Sony's exclusive rights to Zeiss AF optics. Hence me even saying what I did in my previous post.

I want Sony to 'wow' pretty bad right now and at the same time, I dread the very thought.

Don't worry. The Zeiss glass for Sony is not of the same quality as the ZE line. There are only two decent prime lenses for it - the 85/1.4 and the new 24/2. If more are released then it may become a good option. The zooms are not up to old Contax standards..

It's too bad actually. If there were good Zeiss zooms for the system, I'd get rid of my 7D and all Canon glass in a heartbeat. I'm only keeping that configuration because sometime AF is important.

considering this lens too. Gahhhhhh so many decisions! I want a lens that I can use to walk around with that will pair up with my 135L. It would be used for full body images for portraits, I don't foresee MF being an issue either. There is the 35L, CZ 35mm, 50L or the CZ 50mm Makro that I'm looking at. This lens has that awesome CZ 3D look to it...

The 135mm 2L was my only lens on my 1Ds II for two months and it was a sensational time. However I can relate with you in looking for a shorter FL that is complimentary to 135mm. I have owned this lens twice and the only reason I don't anymore is because of upcoming 35mm 1.4 ZE that was announced not too long ago.

I am pretty damn excited about the release of this optic, I have to admit.

Depends if AF is important to you or not. All ZE glass is MF only, but some people would gladly hand over AF abilities to give their fingers some exercise and get that nice, Zeiss micro-contrast and rendering.

I'm absolutely blown away by the colors and "3D" look of the shots from this lens. I was set on spending 400 or so bucks on a Sigma 30mm, but I will be giving this lens further consideration. I don't need the lens anytime soon, so I think it may be worth saving up a bit longer for this. The 35 L is more than I'd like to spend though.

Keep posting shots!!!

Nope, single exposure. I typically have the camera tripod mounted and use live view for composing the image and checking that I have the exposure I want. I also like to shoot in the evening which gives me a more even light and less sharp contrasts.

Hi Wummy,

Yes the focus confirmation light works great on the 5Dc - I also have the beep enabled as sometimes the light is a little faint in bright daylight (for me anyway).
You may want to invest in a prescision matte screen although to be honest, I installed one but it didnt make *that* much difference. If I wasnt using the focus confirmation light then yes, I would use the Ee-S screen but otherwise, the standard screen is fine.
As far aperture, I control it fine from the camera.
Cheers.

For me the precision matte screen makes a huge difference. A must-buy IMO. Focussing by eye will be so much more easier.

Love this lens - anyone getting sporadic Err 01 "clean lens contacts" or something like that? I've gotten it twice over the past couple of days. Beyond that, works great don't want take it off. Excepet for the 21!

I Am selling all but my 24-105 to keep on my 7d for kid shots, everything else is going zeiss prime. These lenses blow me away. The colour on that 21 is so dead on, and I have never seen a wide angle with tis kind of finedetail.

I never had it with the ZE 2/35, but did with the ZE 2/50. I called up the shop where I bought the lens and was planning on just asking for some advice in general. They told me to come back and exchange the lens, so I did. Never had the issue since.

Hmmm...it is happening about 1x a day...may have to take it back. Or maybe I could just clean the contacts on my camera (as they've never received any "love").

I don't really care that much unless it becomes a huge problem as I love this lens...and it has a nice warranty.

Thanks, Jelle! To answer your question: to some extent. Also, I think the 50 is a great lens, but not so much for landscaping. The 35 is perfect for that (given that I already have the 24LII).

I am looking for that gap between the 24 and 50 and this lens might just do the job. I've been eyeing this for quite sometime and have held it on number of occasions. It has 3D popping-ness which is quite superb.

I just have to wait a few more months :)

35/2 Biogon ZM vs 35/2 Distagon ZE:
The ZM has a lower overall contrast and less punch. It's sharper on an M9 than the ZE is on a 5DII, but that's not saying much. Overall as far as rendering style goes the ZM is closer to the 28/2 Distagon ZE than it is to a 35/2 ZE.

You need to press the shutter half and hold it. When you are focused right, it'll beep.

Thanks. No CPL used. I have done a bit of PP - mainly a drop in luminance on the blues to get the sky darker and kicking up the colour temp by 100-200 degrees (and a very slight nudge of the tint towards magenta for the one of the gate).

Hi All - I am about to pick up this lens in Japan but I'm getting confused. Here's a link of the lens I want in B&H

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/658553-REG/Zeiss_1762_850_Distagon_35mm_T.html

but in Japan they look like this:

http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/cz/zf-35/index.html

so from the pix the lens looks completely different. Even the filter size is different. I think USA ones from DPreview is 72mm where in Japanese official site its 58mm.

Can you guys let me know are they same lens but just maybe different pictures?? or are they completely different lens.

Thanks!

Gosh, the 5d is due for an update cuz it's 2 years old now. So I don't wanna bite yet. That and it's $2500, $1700 if I sell the t2i. For this shot, I think FF would've helped in including most of the building to emphasize height. Yet, the crop forced me to lead the eye to the pretty signage as well as the corniche details.
