Old Newgate Prison revisited (5 photos)

Last winter I had posted some exterior shots of the 'Old Newgate Prison and Copper mine' in East Granby, Connecticut. Well today I had a chance to get back there and go in to the prison and down into the mine where they kept the prisons
This is a photo of what is left of some of the above ground prison walls.

Imagine having to work and sleep down there!...That's terrible!

It must have been awful. When you go down there it is constantly wet and dripping very dank and dark, you have to duck in some place because the ceiling is so low, you are any where from 40 feet to 60 feet below ground, the only plus is on a hot day it is nice and cool down there.

Well I'm sure that's where they stole the Idea, when we came over we weren't all that imaginative. that's why most of our towns have the same British names :lol: :lol: :lol:

Thanks Sandi; It is very interesting indeed, Really the place to visit on a very hot day, it's about 58d f. (14 celsius) down in the mine. :lol: :lol:

horrible conditions then . those last shots and reading the notice
the stone looks like marble. nice colours in it

the bell looks good in the rebuilt guard's house ( third shot )
as it's at ground level, it's a wonder it's not stolen:confused:

Thanks Marie; Some of the colours in the mine are traces of copper and other ores. Not to worry about that bell, the place is surrounded by thick walls and a locked gate, and the bell is mighty heavy. :lol: :lol: :lol: I must get back there. I saw many more photo opportunites, just didn't have all that much time.
