OK. I had a very simple brief today from the local rag today (i.e. shoot a few of the local riders in action), which gave me some time to try out a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Here are a few pics from a first-time cycling photographer...
It was a very tight circuit...

The leaders went through in formation...

There were some attempts to break away from the pack...

Some of the corners were a bit fishy...

Not sure about this slow-sync flashy panning malarkey...

You need to stay focused to succeed...

Determination can reap it's rewards...

Still not sure about this fishy, flashy panning thingmy...

Always be aware that there always are riders behind you...

gmen , These are superb . Could you pass on how you have your camera settings sharpening ,focusing etc . It's wonderfull to see such sharp images which I am afraid to say I can't at the moment.
Learning from from your posts I also noticed you have a IEC Colour profile attached . Could you tell me how this is applied to the image .
Thanks
Otta

Many thanks charles... It was a excellent afternooon... and the good thing is that you get plenty of chances to make the shot as these guys do quite a few laps!

Gavin -- once again you've shown your superb talent. And once again you've brought back some wonderful memories. When I was young and skinny -- a long, long time ago -- I did a bit of road racing myself. Your images bring tears to my eyes -- I can almost feel the energy and hear the spokes singing in the wind. For what it's worth though I'm not sure about the slow-sync flashy panning myself.

Pleased that you like 'em Jerry! The fitness of these guys was phenomenal and very impressive to watch at close quarters.
As for the slow-sync flashy thingmy - the jury's still out on that one- they're growing on me slightly... but not a lot! Most of the other photogs were shooting almost exclusively with flash - a mix of slow sync and fill I suppose. Also the lens of choice was predominantly the 70-200 focal length. Therefore I felt inclined to shoot at 300mm+ or with the fish just for something a bit different. Hmmm!
Here's a conventional panning shot with no flash and another slow sync shot just to add to the debate *lol*...

OK, now here's the problem ... I have the world's best sports photography equipment (with the 300mm f2.8 in the air to me from New York City) and a friend who owns a bike store and she and her husband race ... so until these images I was able NOT to take time to go shoot them, but now I'm afraid I won't be able to resist. These are really super. Thank you.

Thanks Dwight! I hope you'll get to shoot some cycling soon. You'll love it I'm sure!

I'm sure you'll get plenty of superb pics Pete! Brentwood town centre didn't make for the greatest backdrop to the pics (apologies to anyone from Brentwood)... I'd imagine that Paris and the Alps will serve you somewhat better *lol*
