View Full Version : Why black thumbnails?

When I convert a jpeg to a psd or tiff file (to prevent further compression with future editing), and save it in "My Pictures" for PSE3, the newly created psd file frequently appears black as a thumbnail, not as the image itself. The original jpeg is always viewable, not black before or after. I've tried waiting long enough periods of time between steps in creating the new file to permit the computer and PSE3 to process. Any suggestions?

I used to use Elements 2 (I now use PS CS) so I'm not sure this applies to Elements 3 but Elements 2 could not handle 16 bit files. By chance are you converting to 16 bit files? If so that could be the problem.

With my Canon S70, unless shooting RAW, it's 8-Bit. I can open the files in PSE3 and print them, but they show up black in their 'My Pictures' file. Any other ideas on converting from jpegs and not getting black thumbnail effect?

Can you "see" the tiffs? You MAY have to convert to a tiff instead? The WinDoze viewers seem to have "issues" with some files.
