Can anybody explain what instigates the creation of a new folder within the "DCIM" folder on the CF card ?
I know the camera (20D) creates sequentially numbered files beginning with "CANON100" and continues "101","102" etc. What I don't understand is when it creates them. Can anybody enlighten me ?

You can choose continuous or auto reset numbering. The folder will assign numbers from 0001 to 9999. A new folder is created every 100 images. The auto created folder is Canon100 as you already know and it continues making folders ( 101,102 etc.. ) as needed.

OKaaay....it's every 100 images !! Thanks LisaMarie. I've just re-read the manual and must have missed that line before. Duhh.

Personally I ignore the folders that the camera creates. I use DIM from http://alanlight.com to download the images from my camera, using a card reader, it ignores the folders and copies all the pics into the folder you specify.

It's just how it manages its files. ALWAYS let the camera delete the images instead of deleting them off the card through a reader. It'll help avoid problems you don't want to deal with.
