Everytime I get ready to settle down and purchase a P&S a new batch of models hits the market.
This is what I seek.
Min noise
Excellant Picture Quality
Little to no lag
Fast focus
Reasonably priced
No pocket model
Decent zoom
I have a dslr and what my purpose for the P&S will be used for mainly is to take on bike trips for those quick scenic stops and get back on and ride more. My dslr and aray of lenses are just too much to carry on a bike.
It doesn't even have to be a canon I want the best for the money so any input into this will be appreciated.

James, do you want it to save the images as RAW files or as JPGs? And will you be using the images mostly on the web or for large prints?

Hi Mike,
I'm guessing I will mostly be shooting jpeg and use for the web and emails only. Not to say if it has raw capability I wouldn't shoot in raw any but for what I'm wanting I'd say 99.9% of the shootings will be jpegs

You might look at the SX20 or SX200 - not pocketable but have a good zoom range. I don't think there are any P&S with a shutter lag that comes even close to a DSLR though.

Thanks Jon,
I had my eye on the sx10IS then here comes along the sx20IS but that 1fps kinda scared me. The camera is in the size I want but I thought maybe there may be another out there in other brands folks have used that I'm unaware of that still has great IQ and with min shutter lag. I know 10 fps has really spoiled me but it's just too much to pack on a bike when taking weekend trips.

Well, the SX-1 does up to 4 fps (for top frame rates, none of these will re-focus between shots) if that's important. Same size as the SX10/SX20. It also has a CMOS sensor like the big boys and shoots RAW.

Thanks Jon,
I totally overlooked that camera.
Guess now I need to do a search and see what quality images folks are getting with this model.

In a DPReview comparison with its competition, the SX 10 wins out:

At various places in the three professional online reviews of the SX 20 the observations are made that the SX10 and SX 20 both have Digic IV; the SX 20 focuses and shoots slightly faster; but the SX 10 is better in low light---a key factor which would lead me to the SX 10. Although neither shoots in RAW, there is always CHDK, which I've used on the S3 IS and the A590 IS. It works beautifully.

Anyway, I'm reading these notes about the SX20 IS and others - I looked at an SX20 IS today up close, but since I already have an S5 IS and don't use it a lot, I'm in no hurry. It does look good for macros though.

I have my 8.1mp Fujifilm from Walmart, has plenty of noise in low light and not always quick on the shutter! I always use my DSLR anyways...

possibly a worthwhile read......

i've been eyeing the A590 a bit..... my A610 seems to have just died, and i like to have a P&S that allows a manual mode where i can control aperture, shutter speed, etc.

Sorry about that. Not sure what happened. Here's a renewed effort to post it:

Before paying the big prices the A590 costs these days, let me suggest comparing the reviews of the A590 with either or both the A2000 and SX110 at Trusted Reviews. Whereas for IQ the A590 only rates a "6", the A2000 gets a "10" and the SX110 a "9." Page 6 in all the reviews shows why. I've had hands-on experience with both the A590 and the A2000, and I'd say those ratings are accurate. Although the A2000 doesn't allow full manual control, the SX110 does and, with great zoom and excellent IQ, costs less now than the A590. (I love the A2000 both for its IQ for its pocket-ability, and its "P" mode gives enough control for me.)

yeah, that was the one thing that kept me from jumping on board and buying it right away. lol
i was also amazed by the 869 amazon reviews resulting in a 4.5 of 5 star rating. i was initially looking for as close a replacement as i could find for my A610, but i'm just at the beginning stages of my research.... i've got another 2 or 3 weeks of research yet before i wind up buying a decent P&S under $200. lol
thanks for the links though.
