This was my first airshow in a really long time, at McGuire AFB. We missed the early fighter jets because we were stuck in traffic for an hour trying ot get in, and had to leave before the Blue Angels show because my son had a baseball playoff game. We still had a good time for the hour or so we were able to stay. Here are a few shots.

Pretty nice shots Phil. I think that the shutter speed is a little high though. I always like when you have the prop blurred thru about 1/4 of it's rotation. But thats just me.

Nice job, Phil. Which lens did you use for these shots?
The Blue Angles come to San Francisco in October, and I hope to try shooting from the water. I'm hoping I can use the 70-200 with the 1.4----I'm hoping it will be long enough if I can get the boat pretty close.

Nice shots Phil, While the plane in the first shot needs no introduction (To me anyway), does anybody know what the plane in the second shot is?
The arrangement of The Blue Angels was terrific. :D

Don't see too many planes with a buble canapoy and a cabin!!!
I like the SAI Marketti (blue w/teeth) personally, (not sure how to spell it though)

Geez! That mustang is so shiney.
Love the pictures. So sharp and clean. Maybe next time use a slower shutter speed for more prop blur as previously mentioned. =)
Aweful camoflauge though! It's funny because some german pilots started noticing that their planes can go faster if their paintjobs were glossy and smooth like the bare metal mustangs (less friction). So they glossed them up on the field at the expense of having the sun glimmer off them more and being seen. I hear of 20-30kph increases in speed from this.

Thanks for all the feedback.
That's a great tip on the slower shutter speed to show some prop blur. It never even crossed my mind, and handholding the 500mm was pretty dicey to say the least, so I wanted to keep the shutter speed as high as possible to compensate for my shake.
I used the 500mm on a monopod for the first shot, handheld in #2 and #3, and the 300/4L IS in #4 and #5.
Hydro, the 70-200 with the 1.4x might be a little on the short side, but if you pick your spots you will be able to get some tight shots.

You must've been there Sunday. Here's a shot with the ol' kit lens taken on Saturday. If you happened to see the Coast Guard "NASCAR" style trailer, thats' my unit. Man I need a longer lens!

Awesome shots! Too bad you clipped the wing & tail of the P-51.
What sort of shutter speed does it take to stop a 2,000 rpm prop?
