View Full Version : The Lens Fairy: Good idea?

So I bought my husband a new lens and am trying to decide how I should give it to him. I won't say which lens it is because it doesn't matter; let's just say it's one that has been near the top of his wish list for a while.

Anyway, I am returning from a rather long trip on Friday and could just give it to him then, box and all. That way he would get to do his own unboxing, which is always fun.

However, I had another idea. I thought maybe when he wasn't looking, I could mount it on his camera and then tuck it back into his camera bag that way. Knowing him, it could be as long as a week before he used the camera, so I might be waiting with baited breath for quite some time. But it would be pretty funny for him to pull out the camera and see this lens on it, as if the Lens Fairy visited him at night.

Which way would you rather get a new lens as a surprise?

Hmmm..tough choice. The question is, if you mounted it on his camera would he say "YOU TOUCHED MY CAMERA!?!?!?!" :D

haha I would say mount it and wait... If someone got me a lens I had been wanting, that would be a REALLY cool way of receiving it. Just try to to tip him off by asking him to take picture or something you know?

Good luck, make sure to let us know how it works out!

Lens Fairy, Definately!

I say you put it in a place where he will see it, but not right away. Put it in a kitchen cabinet and ask him to get something out of it. Put it in the fridge, put it in his sock drawer, be inventive. The surprise of a new toy isn't as exciting as the surprise of finding it.

Or, if you want to be really creative, when you see him, tell him to meet you in the bedroom, you have something for him to unwrap. When he comes in expecting a little red-light action, pull out the box. He'll be happy, and you won't have far to travel to celebrate.

Or else create a Boudoir Series on short notice! ;)

Uh, you know, the thought just occurred to me, is he a member of the forum? If so, I think the cat will be out of the bag before you get the cat in the bag.

Nah, he's not like that. I may be with my camera, but he's definitely not. ;)

No, but if anyone reading this knows me from another forum, please don't say anything over there, because he does read that one!

Lens Fairy!

Yeah, I'm thinking Lens Fairy is the way to go. It will have the most shock value, I think. I just hope I don't have to wait too long for him to find it!

Lens fairy definately - give him a nice shock.

The idea from Katodog seems like a good one!

I would love to go to use my camera and there be a nice new lens on it. Tell that Lens Fairy to visit my house.

Well dont put the lens in the refrigerator... I like the idea of either mounting it to his camera body and putting it back in the bag, or hiding it somewhere in the house where he'll stumble across it within a couple days.

The two ideas aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. ;)

OK, sounds like everyone thinks the Lens Fairy idea will be worth the (possibly long) wait. I'll post again in this thread once I've successfully mounted the lens and stashed the camera back in his bag. That will probably happen over the weekend, although I might get a chance on Friday night.

Then you all will have to be in suspense along with me! :D

Tuck it into his bag and then proceed to tell him that you have decided to let him take nude pictures of your self he will more than likely run for the bag to get the camera ...The dow:pnside is he may not notice the new lens as his mind may be elsewhere...

neilwood32

Rooeey - you are right but it might still be a lot of fun.

Although knowing the mindset of photographers here and elsewhere, i think the first thing he would notice is the camera!

Nude woman = meh, new lens = woohoo!

This was not easy. On Friday night we were totally geeking out with camera equipment, and it was all I could do to keep my mouth shut. I hid the lens in my own camera bag, where I knew he would never find it. Then today he had to go to an event all day and took his camera bag with him, so I had no access to it.

Finally had my chance five minutes ago. Slipped into his office and saw that he left the camera OUT of its bag, just sitting on his desk. Ack! I really want there to be that moment of revealment as he pulls camera w/ new lens out of the bag. So I just mounted the lens and packed it into his camera bag. I'm hoping he won't remember that he left it out!

That's all for now.

Sweet. He didn't notice a thing and just grabbed his camera bag to head off to the second day of this event. :D

Jon
8th of November 2009 (Sun), 09:43
Then I hope the lens isn't wildly inappropriate for the event . . . OTOH, if you hadn't put the camera back in the bag he might have gone off with no camera at all :{)#

Now he will get to the event and wonder how he got someone else's camera by mistake and try to swap it back for his own camera.

Very close guess!

LOL. I just got the call from him. It was about seven hours before he got a chance to pull out his camera, and when he did, his first thought was that someone at the event had switched lenses with him in order to steal the lens that had been on the camera! He said he went all around looking for someone else shooting with his "missing" lens before he even bothered to look closely at the new one!!!! He even sent me an sms to tell me someone had stolen his other beloved lens. I didn't hear the sms come in, so I didn't reply. Finally he looked at the lens on the camera and realized what it was (a lens more expensive than the "stolen" one). Then he knew it had to have been me and called me. I of course denied it and blamed the Lens Fairy. ;) Too funny. He's on his way home now, and is in a very good mood. :D

Totally cracking up over here. He said he went through every compartment of his camera bag, looking to see what else had been stolen. He even checked the card in his camera to see if that was still there. He was volunteering at this event and had to start a shift soon after discovering the "theft," and so he didn't have much time to run around looking for someone using his "stolen" lens. He looked around as long as he could and then spent his shift eagle-eying everyone who passed by with a camera. He said when he finally calmed down and looked at the new lens, it was like a huge weight had been lifted, and despair turned into elation, as it dawned on him that his wife was the culprit and that he now had a great new lens. :D

I so got him!!!

This gets him back for what he did to me in June. He dropped me off at the hair salon and told me he'd go to the grocery store while I was getting my hair done. What he really did was drive all the way back home and sneakily put the IPS display I had been craving for months in my computer chair, still in its huge box. I had no idea he had bought the monitor for me. Best surprise ever. But I think I one-upped him here with the Lens Fairy. ;)

I just had him read this thread. He's loving it. :)

Woolburr, I said in my OP that it doesn't matter which lens it was. Rest assured that it was a good one. ;)

Yeah, well I'd like pics too! I wish I had a pics of his reaction when he first pulled out the camera and when he finally had his moment of realization. Imagining it is maybe even better, though. ;)

Never mind which lens it was! You guys wouldn't be interested anyway; he's a Pentaxian. :p

Pentaxian?!! Doesn't that mean that he has to take five pictures for one to come out?

Or, since it's of no interest to guys it's presumably of interest to gals.

This would imply that he is a pentaxian, with five extremely flexible fingers, capable of complex and independent movements, on at least one of his hands. I understand that people with this ability are very popular in some circles. At least, I was told so by a smiling wife.

20droger and neilwood32, why the juvenile devolution here? I've made it pretty clear that I'm a female, so I can only assume that you're being intentionally sexist. It's not in the least bit classy, so just take it to the Warcraft forum or something. K thx.

Apologies if the remarks came over as sexist, it certainly wasnt meant in that way. It was meant as chat between 2 people who have a good banter going in other threads - nothing more.
