Hey guys im new to this forum and as of now i have a canon 20D. I love the camera. I have the lame kit lens as well as i have the nifty fifty. I love that lens. Ok i got a problem i have around 600 dollars and i was wondering what lens i should buy i want a good all around lens.(a walk around lens) Im considering the 70-200 f4 L lens and the 28-135 canon IS as well. What do you guys think. And other suggestions?

the 70-200 is not exactly a walk-around lens. I'd go for a Tamron 28-75 Di XR if you can find one or a Canon 17-40L.

I just got the 70-200f4, but my walk around is the 50mm f/1.4. It used to be the 24-85mm zoom, but the sharpness of the 50mm is unbeatable. The 70-200 will go where I go, but not as a walk-around.

I was in the same boat 2 months ago. I was thinking about the 70-200 the 100-400 the 24-70 and the 17-40. I know they are more than $600, but I decided that better to have the best rather than always wishing I had more. The 70-200mm f/4.0 L is a great value but the 70-200mm f/2.8 is way better, the price reflects that.

You can always sell a lens and move up the ladder. For the most part as you get what you pay for.
I got the 24-70 because its versatility and sharpness. But I would of loved the 70-200mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm f/4.0 would of worked.

I would need something wider than 70mm on the short side. I would consider the 17-85, 28-105 or 28-135 to stay within your limit. Personally I shy away from 3rd party lenses for several reasons. My "walk-around" lens is the 24-70L but it runs more than your limit.

Although it is less a walk around lens, I would go with the the 70-200 F4L as the quality of the lens is exceptional. I personally use it far more often than the Tamron 28-75.

I also think that your initial instinct on the 70-200 F4 is a good one. I shoot more at the tele end than the wide end, so the 28-135 or any other "wide" lens is not as useful for me. I owned the 28-135IS for a while, and sold it after I bought the Tamron 28-75 XR Di. I used the extra speed far more than I used the IS, and the Tamron is a much sharper lens with pretty good build quality. If you are shooting wakeboarding and snowboarding the 70-200 should work well for you. It is a wonderfully sharp lens. Most reviews say it is even sharper than the 2.8 version, you just lose the extra speed and shallow dof if you really need it. Beware though... once you get an L lens, there is no turning back.

I just got my 70-200f/4 not long ago and I love this lense, when I put my 28-105 back on for picks I really notice the diff. A lot of this is because I still do not understand what settings to use but that would be the same for both lenses and the 70-200 always takes better pics. My next lense purchase will be the Tamron 28-75DI.

im sold its gonna be the 70-200L lens i have a question why did you get rid of the 28-135? Im not really conserned about the wide part yet. Dont do much wide angle shooting. How does the 70-200 f4 feel on the xt because my mom has that body and we will probably share the lens.

Glad to see you've made up your mind. I got rid of the 28-135IS because I needed a constant F2.8 lens to freeze motion more than I needed IS (which only helps with slow shutter speeds and still objects). The Tamron was also sharper. If I could afford it, I would have kept both just because the Canon had a little more range, but those two lenses have an overlap that I can't afford to keep in my bag (money or space wise).
