i just bought the non-vc version at a ridiculously low price to just try out and see how i like that version and if the rumors about this VC version having a faster AF and being quieter added with VC.... then i think im gunna sell that one pick this one up! just wanna make sure the optical quality of this lens is as good as then non-vc! So post up some pics those that have this lens!!!!!

Can't wait to see more pics taken with this lens.

I hope they're NOT ALL taken at super high ISOs, some okay, but it would be nice to see pics taken at NORMAL ISOs i.e. 100, 200, 400, etc on bright sunny days, or even bright overcast days to see how SHARP this lens is, and the type of COLOUR it produces.

We have no release date for this lens in the UK, the distributor is even unsure.
Can I ask how some people have this as even Far East importers cannot get hold of them let alone US ones ?

Mine arrived this morning....just a few test shots.

These are straight off the camera, no pp, just resizing.

All 3 are handheld with VC on.
430EXII used (bounce flash from a ceiling 7ft above the book), only one small lamp in the corner of the room. All at 50mm.

Reallly impressed with the VC.

The AF is noisey, but it does not hunt much at all in lowlight.

For a £400 lens with constant f2.8 and VC, I am pleased with it.

Agreed, it looks like the VC works fine. I'm more interested to see how sharp it is and how the colors look.

Oh no prob, Ryan. Wasn't "rushing" you or any other shooter. Just saying as DStanic eluded to, the VC seems to work fine, we're just waiting to see how sharp this lens is, and how well it handles nice, bright colours.

It's all cool.

That's the one thing that had me leaning toward the non VC version over the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 I.S. lens. (aside from the cost factor) I just found that the colours from the Tamron were a lot BRIGHTER and had more "POP" than those from the Canon in the majority of the photos I've seen in the lens sample pages.

So if the VC version produces similar results, AND has VC, then it's a double jackpot whammy!!

Ok a mate popped round with his son so took the opportunity.
All handheld, all at 50mm (as that is where people seem to think this is at it's softest).
Bounce flash from a 430EXII off a ceiling approximately 7/8ft above the subject.
All 1/200s and ISO400. No PP at all.

Those were nice shots taken with this lens. I do agree this lens is amazing

Unfortunately, my experience with this lens was not without issues. I want to find out are there any other users facing some issues that i've faced

Issues i faced were mainly AF related
1) Try focusing outdoors daytime with AI focus mode on a distant object, try small apperture >f16. See if it works and focus properly. Mine didn't work on AI focus or One Shot, have to change it to AI servo only it worked.

2) Try selecting manual focus point on f2.8 apperture focusing on a human subject. on the right or left or any other points. Take note if subject is clearly focus. Mine had occasionaly issues where subject won't focus but background is clearly in focus. Take few shots to confirm. Another test is take picture with 2 person... where u focusing on top right or top left on a person's face. See if it focuses properly. I didn't notice this issue until i took more than 300 shots.

3) Plugin your speedlite. See if it hangs. Mine hung on once when i plug in my 580ExII i had to on/off the camera.

4) Try focusing on a subject close distance (of course within the focusing range). See if it focuses correctly.

Just FYI, this is also currently being discussed in another forum.

A retailer in the UK has rejected an entire batch as too many of them were faulty.
The good examples are damn good, a worthy successor to the non VC version. However this is let down by initially poor quality control from Tamron.
I would hope that they sort this soon, but I have to say that once it is sorted and you get a working copy you'll love it.
I have noticed nothing of what that review states to be honest.

I was loaned a 17-50 (non vc) version while waiting for my replacement. It was good actually, focusing was dead accurate and none of issues of the VC surfaced. I'm wondering on how to actually getting a good copy of this lens when an entire batch could be rejected! I was told that my replacement will be shipped in 2 weeks time, hopefully i will be lucky this time around.

I wonder if those rejected ones can be calibrated or if they're junk? I'd like to give it a chance once they are available in store, and if it's not working properly they can send it to tamron and get it fixed. For the price difference over the Canon 17-55IS I'd like to give it a chance..

I purchased this lens about a week ago and finally got a chance to take it out and shoot with it yesterday. I had gotten a little impatient waiting on its release and purchased the non-VC version of this lens a couple of weeks earlier. I was not too impressed with the non-VC version (sharp from f4, a little noisy, contrast and color were only so-so).

This one has blown me away. Sharp wide open, less noise, good color and contrast and I am hand-holding shots at 1/5 of a second and getting great results. I'll try to post some samples later tonight.

Peace.

Bad news. Mine just starting giving an error code about needing to clean the lens contacts. I didn't think it was performing well when I had it out last Friday night. Sadly I think this one is going back. I can't decide if I want to try another one or go with the 28-75, which I have rented and also loved. I'm gun shy after starting to hear these reports about quality control. :(

Thanks Jeff,
I am giving it a trial (not decide to keep it yet since I had it for just few days) and amazon allow to return :)
The blue net does makes me worry too, I will take my trusty L lens and go to the same spot again today, then crank up the color again to see if the blue is obvious like the Tamron.
Other than that (had to filtered out the color) I love the lens so far. Very useful and looks great for Video too... the VC is a main factor (The 16-35L will win me easily if it have IS).
Anyway, anyone with the Tamron 17-50 VC version please add pictures/Opinion.

I purchases this lens last friday and tried it over the weekend.

I allready have the Tamron 28-75mm but wanted a wider zoom for indoor shots, and was very keen on this. I really like the 28-75mm, but the 17-50 disappointed me.
I shot about 150 pictures with it, and my copy produced 50% keepers, the rest were outher backfocused or very soft. I tried it with ISO range 400-1250, the majority with my 580EXII. All my shots were wide open or f/3.2 I tried it with and without VC.
Here's a snapshot of my son where it did focus correctly, shot in RAW and only PP is white balance adjustment, no sharpening.

I returned it today and bought a Canon 17-55 IS instead. It's way more expensive of course, but the AF-speed and accuracy has so far amazed me.

I realize they are completely different lenses, but it does seem the 60mm macro knocks the Tammy out of the park where sharpness is concerned. These were all taken with the same s/s, aperture, ISO400, 60mm macro.

YMMV, of course.

No you can't :)

I just can't figure out how I feel about the Tamron. It seems I always end up liking pictures from my other lenses better (zooms or primes).

I'm going to give it a good run on Christmas though and see what I get.

Well, I'm sorry I don't have anything to report. I also recently acquired the 50 mm 1.4 and couldn't bear to take it off my camera all weekend. I posted several shots from it in the Lens Sample Photo thread plus a couple of threads with pics of my nieces in the "People" section.

The Tammy is coming out this weekend for sure. I need to decide how it's performing and if it's a keeper asap. I'll post results as I get them.

Here are some shots from last night. They're not nearly as sharp as I'd hoped, but I was shooting wide open and not terribly steady (it WAS New Year's Eve). Also I forgot that I'd reset the camera back to defaults a few days ago, and you simply can't leave the T1i on the default sharpness of 3. I always bump it up.

FWIW, here are the shots:

Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Exposure Bias: 0 EV

Found one of these lenses under the Christmas Tree this year. Like having F2.8, just have to get use to not having up to 85mm. Though so far it seem to be a very sharp lens with nice color.

Here are some shots from last night. They're not nearly as sharp as I'd hoped

I think you have too much "prime quality" in your head, lol and you keep comparing that with every other lens you probably have. Those shots look pretty clear to me to be honest.

And yes it was new years eve, lol, Vodka was the order of the day not Canon for me!

Thanks, JayStar86. That makes me feel better. I just seems everyone else is posting "tack sharp" images so I feel a bit silly when mine are soft. I did like these shots - what I great model I ended up with, huh? She was gorgeous!

I mean Im assuming your focus point(s) were on the faces, and well, the faces in all of those shots look pretty sharp to me.

I always bump it up.

amazing what you learn reading these boards for 4 hours a day!
I didn't know about this and didn't know where to find those setting. Now I know and it does make a difference!

Those look pretty good for ISO 800 & 400 shots.

If possible next time you get a chance to shoot some subjects [people] could you stop the lens down to f4.0, 1/125 and shoot at ISO 200 with your camera in manual and your flash vertically bounced in ETTL mode?

I would like to see this Tamrons sweetspot for sharpness indoors on portraits like you posted.

I have not noticed any problems with the sharpness, I was actually quite impressed with how the images from it looked straight from the camera. The only issue I had was that for hours after I got it delivered, half the time it would not autofocus but I think it had been lying in a cold enviroment prior to delivery, it seems ok now. I haven't taken that many with it yet, I could upload the raw files to something like rapidshare if you like? If that's possible with a free account. The cat photo was with vc @ 1/10 sec

oh okay..... good to hear. No need for the uploaded shots for me... maybe others will like to see them and will post up.

I was just asking because many people were unhappy with the original batch of these lenses that were sold were extremely soft and/or were having severe back/front focusing issues.

Its good to hear that all these latest posts about this lens seem like they are sharp copies... Im looking to buy this lens so i am obviously interested in this lens and how people are fairing with it, lol.

Thats discouraging news and hopefully just you getting a bad copy. Your pics look very good on my monitor and independent site test reviews are starting to roll-in showing good results with this VC version.

Although regardless of how sharp this lens is when folks spend their hard earned money they expect better QC then has been reported thus far from owners of this VC version. You are definitely not the 1st to complain of focus issues & that could possibly be related to body to lens contact errors.

Here is a new test review below and Photozone may post results late next week from what i read:

That looks fine to me at f2.8 from 4 ft. in the 1st capture on my monitor.

You should have shot the exact same focus subject scene at f4.0 and f5.6 and posted for comparison.

When you find the time line three subject items up horizontally 1 ft. apart with the middle subject item 1ft. further back. Set your camera to f2.8, center point focus, and aim for the center subject item and post a pic.

What bothers me is the f/4 shot, it looked like the f/2.8 shot. I was hoping for a sharper image when stopped down. So you think there's no problem with the focus accuracy?

The second one looks especially sharp to me, it's maybe a dof issus, too shallow a dof.

Identical subject shots at same FL but different apertures would be the best to compare.

I mentioned the other horizontal line-up test to check for other possible focus issues when you find the time.

I also suggest you use the same FL for each test shot and i would use 35mm which is a sweetspot. In fact f5.6 and 35mm was the non-vc versions best in review tests performed.

The previous non-vc Tamron was softest at f2.8, 50mm
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/355/cat/23

The new VC version has a few more internal elements so its not identical to the non-vc version but should be close enough IMO.

Most of the issues i have heard about the VC version is coming from Canon owners versus the Nikon folks whom seem to be very satisfied.

Those shots of your new Pup look outstanding ! Very sharp at f4.0.

You put it at f5.6 and they will be even sharper !

I didnt know you were getting the 40D. Congratulations on acquiring one of Canons all time favorite bodys.

If you get you a battery grip for the 40D you might want to consider getting the below to ease the pain on your neck carrying all that weight around for more then a few hours.

I think im going to purchase the below which is highly regarded:

Congratulations on your Pup & 40D !

Got my replacement in the post today, this one seems to work perfectly. the first thing I noticed was the af motor sounded different to the faulty one, the new one sounds more precise when autofocusing. So far it has shown none of the autofocus problems that my first one had. It focuses fast and quietly as far as I am concerned, apart from things that are too dark (like my black cat). I almost had a scare when it wouldn't autofocus again (I forgot I had left it in manual focus mode), anyway I am more than happy. I got it for £400 online, another retailer (warehouse express) wanted £530 for it. here are some samples. I am very happy with the sharpness, great colour too. I think the first one was f2.8 and the other two were f4

Looks as if some nice BRIGHT and COLOURFUL images are starting to appear from the VC version of this lens.

I've always thought that the non VC Tamron 17-50 produced sharper, more vibrant images than the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 I.S. lens, now if the VC version of the Tamron lens can match the non VC version as far as IQ, sharpness, and colour vibrancy goes, they'll have a winner on their hands.

I agree, since at present it doesnt look like any of the vendors are pulling their initial copy orders from the shelfs. Too many folks IMO are having to return this lens for exchange or disgusted and requesting a refund.

I like you am still holding out for more reviews and letting the 1st copy batch be depleted.

Although I didn't end up with the Tamron VC, I kinda like the 3d look it produces just like the Canon 35L. The Tamron is brighter, more colorful and has that 3D look compare to my 17-55 IMO, but the focus is still unpredictable. I noticed that it locks on focus when using a flash. I like the picture by the way, very nice.

Bought the lens today, have a week to try it out.. otherwise, I'm getting the 15-85.

So far: RAZOR sharp @ >f/5.6, focus is... unpredictable.. doesn't make sense that pointing it at the same spot causes the focus to seek.

The thing is though, some people like to compare the 17-50VC to the 15-85 and claim the latter is a lot better, but it's really not.. I can stop down my 17-50 @ 17mm to 3.5 and @ 50mm to 5.0 and the pictures come out terrific.. the 15-85 doesn't have the option to go down to 2.8 at all though! The only thing it adds is extra 2mm on the wide side and 35mm on the tele side which can come in extremely handy- but is it worth the extra $$$ and loss of a constant aperture?

Here's a funny one. Tamron 17-50mm VC mounted on my 1d MarkII just for kicks. It obviously vignettes throughout the entire focal length.

Picked up this lens from the Best Buy Outlet on eBay (Nikon mount, obviously) as refurbished. Had to use max focus adjustment on my body to get it to AF properly, but it seems OK now. Disappointed with how soft it is wide open, but by f4 it seems decently sharp.

FWIW,

I'm not sure how I feel about the lens as of yet.

So far my results have been inconsistent. That usually is a result though of OP error and learning the lens and camera...in this case a 7D.

It usually takes me a month of shooting to get consistent results.

I'm certainly not unhappy with the lens but, for me, I'm not sure it's a keeper yet.

:)

Do you think it's sharper?

If this question was for me then I say yes! I had the VC originally and there was something just not right about it.

I own the non-vc now and it's pretty awesome! Much better than the vc in IQ and sharpness.

For both lenses I had to do some microadjusting for front/back focusing but once dialed in the non-vc was producing way more keepers than the vc ever did.
