go to a book store/library and just flip through and see what you like. If they have a book, they're famous enough for me! lol...
my favorite...annie leibowitz. a bigger name too, which is rare for me, but her "american music" book blew me away.

Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Edward Steichen, Alfred Stieglitz, Gertrude Kasebier, Alfred Langdon Coburn, Southworth and Hawes, Julia Margaret Cameron, Phillipe Halsman, Yousuf Karsh, Arnold Newman, Arnold Genthe, August Sander, Mike Disfarmer, Francesco Scavullo, David Bailey, Cecil Beaton, Doris Ullman, Lotte Jakobi, Bert Stern, Irving Penn, Edward Sheriff Curtis, Richard Avedon
The ones I could think of off the top of my head. Some of them are not known primarily for portraits, but they all made outstanding portraits.

I still remember the shot Yousuf Karsh took of Churchill. He took away his cigar & hit the shutter!:D:D:D
Edward Steichen (Capt.) did some stunning work during WWII when he was in the Navy. I bought a book of his work in the '50s for $1.00 What a bargain!

Would like to add Diane Arbus and Mary Ellen Mark.
A more modern photographer is Loretta Lux.

I did not know where to add this link, but since this thread mentions Edward Steichen, I'd though I'd post it here:

Take a look at Lord Lichfield, a famous recently deceased British photographer with a very wide ranging portfolio.
