Had my first attempt at motorsport photography on the weekend, 350D with the kit lens and a Tamron 28-200.

Jake
Thanks for putting these images up on here, and wow! what good pictures, I just love no 1 & 6.
what better proof do we need to show how the rear end shots produce great action pictures.
well done mate, thankyou.

Thanks Martin, while they aren't professional quality I am extremely wrapped with the results. Once I get some L series glass I'm definately going to shoot motorsport more often, had a lot of fun!

Jake
would you allow me to edit your image no 1.
I would repost it to try to prove whether you need L glass lenses, if i can.

Are you implying that maybe a set of L series 'glasses' would help
Seriously, I wasn't sure how to approach post pro on #1 with all that dust. Sadly white balance has been quite an issue with almost every shot coming out of the 350D with a bluish cast, after searching the net others have mentioned this. I'll probably just calibrate it in camera next time or shoot a grey card if time permits. I find it hard to get spot on in post without a neutral reference.
Anyway without further ranting, you have permission to edit away. Thanks for showing such a genuine interest.

The most important thing to remember is the "image" and not always the quality of the lens that was used to produce that image.
in your set of pictures the quality is vary good in my view,
however the actual pictorial image comes across as even better.
so its not all about top quality lenses but how you the "photographer" puts the picture together in the first place, do you get my drift.
many people spend thousands on equipment and yet are not always able to see a
"image"
(who am I to say this as I use a lot of L glass and it is good) but mine is often used because of fast appertures shooting my on stage stuff and concerts. not all people need fast lenses for that reason.
Your shots are as sharp thats not a problem, you have conveyed the action really well .
now what iI have done to no 1 is added a lot of grain in photoshop also cloned out 1 bright stone top right, did this deliberately to down grade the quallity of your picture.
This is really to show that the image is still there. we still see a white and red Toyota travelling at speed around a dusty corner.
By all means get some Canon L glass but my message, its not always essential.

I agree 100%, when it comes to motorsport I'd just appreciate the faster focus and better detail rendition for those shots that don't quite fill the frame. If anything to improve the amount of keepers, not to fool myself into thinking it's about the lens.
In the end good glass can't improve on getting it right in camera, nor will equipment improve how the photographer composes a shot, manages the light or predicts the movement/expression of the subject. All of which 'make' a picture with or without optical quality.
I'll send you a PM with a link to an English girl, who at 15 makes absolutely amazing pictures with nothing but a point &shoot and natural/household lighting.
