Let's face facts. "Rebel" is so 1995 and Kiss (the Japanese names) is too close to the "rainbow brigade" ;) Canon need to come up with a new name for the "Rebel" series.

Now, I'm assuming Americans can't understand numbers (so the XXXD numbering system is not usuable... :p ) so my question is:

HOW SHOULD CANON RENAME THE "REBEL"?

MULTIPLE CHOICE POLL!!11

I think Americans can understand numbers - it's just apostrophes they can't understand!:D

Sorry Roy, it's fixed. ;)

You can vote now. Multiple choice too.

BTW I'm from Australia and live in Hong Kong. So I guess it's Australians who can't understand apostrophes (even though I used them three times correctly in the last two sentences ;) ).

Wouldn't it be "Insurrectionist" instead of "Insurrectionary"?

How about: "Das Kamera". Sounds sorta Euro-tek, huh? ("Le Clic" has already been used... Not that we're above re-using something.)

Or how about "Aardvark", that way it would end up first on everyone's list? They could have a little talking aardvark "spokesperson", sort of like the Geico gecko.

Oooo... "Plasiticon" would be sort of retro-futuristic, in a "Lost in Space" or "Jetsons" way.

Americans only understand numbers with a lot of commas in them, and a minus sign in front.

Or, to better reflect the source of the camera, how about "Samurai"?

I'm leaning toward "Ninja", although "Malcontent" and "Nihilist" are both very tempting.

Oo! Oo! Ooo! How about "Disestablishmentarianist"?

Or, call it "Hope" or "Change" and use some edited clips of Obama to market it. It could be offered in a kit with a Chia Obama (www.chiaobama.com)

Too many choices... I can't decide.

Tom W

HOW SHOULD CANON RENAME THE "REBEL"?

MULTIPLE CHOICE POLL!!11

Half of those names describe me! :D

Robert16
5th of November 2009 (Thu), 10:50
They should all have names. Instead of a typical 'tog conversation sounding like " So I took my 1Ds III with my 70-200mm f2.8 ....." You would have " So I produced the ORGASMATRON and fitted the ANNIHILATOR". Much more colourful........imagine what your gear list would sound like.

Agreed, Todd. Somehow it always makes me think of the Rebel motorcycle commercials. As corny as can be, maybe other than the Night Rider ones.

It must have been a Japanese culture thing, maybe?I can assure you "Rebel" is a purely Canon USA product, so Americans are partly to blame! Japan has the "Kiss", and that is fine in their culture.

If you think about it, Rebel could make sense in the following way: Americans have rebelled against England. They were the rebellious kid who stood up against the oppressive parents. So Europe and Asia, less Japan, get the nice xxxD and xxxxD designation, Japan can do whatever it wants, and Canon USA goes for "Rebel".

However, my story fails to explain why all of North America (Mexico and Canada, the latter of which is part of the Commonwealth of Nations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations)) is included under the Rebel tag. :p

No, that's my point actually. I think to the Japanese, they view the word Rebel as being a "marketable" term here, something that we Americans would like. Honda did the same thing with their motorcycles.

How about a name for each country..

We could have Bruce or Trevor for Australia, Earl for America, Sven for Sweden, Fritz for Germany, Yuri for Russia, Pedro for Spain and Mexico, Vlado for Bosnia, Pierre for France etc etc..

But we would also have to market it for the fairer sex.. Sheila for Australia, Cindy for America,,,,,,,,,

I don't see what's wrong with "Rebel", honestly (tho I know this thread is all in fun). I've never minded the name, I thought it fit, actually - I saw it as referring to the idea that film cameras (and competitors cameras, both film and dslr) were maybe old school, or "behind" in technology, (however true that may or may not be), or hard to use for 'newbies', and then here comes Canon with it's "Rebel", that can be both a serious photographers camera, and a camera that ppl can use if they're coming from point-and-shoots. For me it conjurs up images of being free to go where you want and do what you want and take great pics with no problems and no strings, and it didn't do things the same as other cameras did. It's a Rebel : ) I think the name's perfect honestly, and see no reason to change it.

Tho if they did change it, I vote for Pirate.

The Rebel is a silly name, to me. It reminds me of Billy Idol (Rebel Yell) or those Andre Agasi commercials when he had the mullet and wore pink.

Just the model number, please.

But then, the Rebel is marketed toward people who are just getting into DSLRs and want something cool sounding (although rebel is NOT cool sounding---except in Star Wars--then it's cool).

Reminds me of the commercial a few years ago when some hikers are stopping to drink some fresh mountain spring water (it's a modern commercial but set in the seventies) and one of the hikers says, "We could bottle this, sell it, and make a fortune."

All the other hikers look at him like he just said the dumbest thing in the world, and then one of them replies impatiently, "Dude, water's free."

It was one of those, "I should have thought of that" moments.

I don't know if air around you (fresh air presumably) is the same as canned air. I assume that canned air is free and clean of dirt, etc....moreso than the air just around you.

You cannot get the pressure of canned air (hence compressed) from fresh air around you unless maybe you buy a compressor, which you cannot carry with you in your bag, nor is it convenient to just install wherever you want.

Does anyone have a link to a mini compressor for air you can just take from room to room??

If so, it might save a lot of money in air.

Most "canned air" isn't even air. It's chemicals, including the propellant. As it comes through the narrow opening under pressure and expands it can cause condensation leaving you with fine moisture spots on whatever you spray. If you're not careful, you'll also get droplets of the propellant coming out with it.

There are several. Of course, they are all rather expensive.

If you don't believe me, check medical supply houses for air/oxygen bottle fillers.

RiaGurl

I voted "pirate", but I really want it called the Canon Pubescent, because the camera has nothing to do with being a rebel, despite your amazing collection of synonyms, and the new title could perhaps offend the most people without actually being rude.

I live off air... and water... sleep is good... oh and food sometimes... yep.

Those things and the occasional moonbeam caught in a jar and boiled over a volcano during an eclipse in the 4th week of Surikentober (we have different calendars)

So, no, I have not seen a pic of the TF so far! A Pole Fairy is plausible, just like a 24-70 2.8 IS is plausible. Real? We won't know until we see one! :)

By the way I never said what kind of Pole. Maybe I mean the North Pole? Santa's little helper Fairy? ;)

And yes, do come up with another toon!

Geeks with no real life experience perhaps.

Someone who started reading the dictionary from the beginning but got bored and jumped to "O" after they hit the word "bored".

Or perhaps someone who wanted to subtly tell someone else to diminish the use of innuendo? Just saying.

Ah ha! Yes, could be that too. You should have used innuendo to get you're point across then. :p

The allusion was not oblique enough perhaps? I mean the initial innuendo.
