Hi All
Is there any difference form using a dedicated canon lens hood ( EW83E)
or a fold down type which I would find more convenient?
To use on my 17-40l
any help on this matter would be very much appreciated,
Steve

The 17-40L should come with a hood?
Anyway, if you are talking about those rubber ones, I would say the the original plastic hood would provide more protection. Other than that, I don't see any difference (well, of course other than price as mentioned by Andy).

Two comments....
A lens hood that isn't properly shaped for a given lens/body combination may cause problems with vignetting.
A solid lens hood will provide MUCH more physical protection for the lens than a fold-up rubber type - without resorting to adding a filter for protection. It will keep your fingers off the lens. It will provide a bumper that will make the routine impacts with things a non-issue. It may, in fact, save your lens and camera if you drop it. I have a camera and lens working today that I dropped onto concrete almost 40 years ago and only had to replace the lens hood.

Thanks for the replies,
I got the lens S/H at a good price the only thing was that I did not get the hood
The chap said that he would try to find it and send it to me but no luck so far,
I am not to worried about the price, I just think the fold down type would be easier, But not sure if their would be any difference
In picture quality
BTW i also use a UV filter,
Steve

True in theory, but maybe moot with a zoom lens on a reduced frame DSLR.
