im having a brain fart, but if i recall this is one key light, bare bulb w/ silverumbrella pulled very close, 2 background lights w/ grids

http://www.mikepanic.com/photos/albums/val_studio_fashion_june_2nd_2005/aag.jpg

what i personally like about this shot is the soft shadows on her face, neck and back of shirt - the one on her chest from her arm does not really bother me.

i have been working rather hard at the "hard" lighting results i have been getting in the studio and i think this shows a much softer lighting.

post processing was ver minimal in RAW and then fm iso-x pro plugin to smooth the skin

feedback?

Mike,
I don't think I'm able to give critique on this image but I do like it! It's a strong image, well executed with good lighting. Like you the shadow on her chest doesn't bother me if I have to make comment then I'd possibly say that I'd like to see a little more contrast in her hair but other than that - great image, I like it a lot.

David

thanks david :) curious why you don't think you can give critique on it though?

Mike, It's quite simple - I've never done any studio work with lighting so I'm really not able to comment on that part - all I can really comment on is the image which I see and I like that a lot - IMHO its a nice pose, easy on the eye and the shadows that are there seem to accentuate the image rather than degrade in any way.

She looks good in that lighting, but I seem to hate the pose. It looks too contrived. Maybe it's because a person would "normally" cup the elbow with the right hand?

David: Bite the bullet (You English have a tradition of doing that!) & buy a couple of lights! You're still teaching photography, aren't you? ;):D

Frank: I don't enjoy lighting tecniques and always make a sham of them - it certainly not one of my strengths - so I'm not the one to comment on them. Luckily its not an area which I have to teach!

(You Americans seem to have habit of falling into the cliché styled pose) :D;)

I certainly like the pose and the "coy, knowing look" the model has it seems to lend a girlish charm to the whole image. However, I will say that since you pointed out the hand, it has become annoying - I would have prefered it had it not shown above the arm.

David

:D I was just picking on you David! ;)

(You Americans seem to have habit of falling into the cliché styled pose) :D:D It's a cliche 'cause it's comfortable! Try it the way shown in the pic. ;)

Should comfort be a consideration for the price of originality!?;) :D

Totally besdie the point, but do you really think so? When I try that it leaves my right arm floating, and providing little or no support for the left arm. When I pinch the right with the left (as in this shot) it gets the left just high enough to actually rest my chin on, but doesn't require any right arm muscle.

That's what I like about Critique Corner, 3 people = 3 (or more) opinions! We're a very democratic group, no? ;-)
(Or do I mean anarchistic, if that's even a word?) :D
