View Full Version : Lens dilemma on the wide end...

I think this has to be only my second 'lens dilemma' post since I joined this forum, so I'll try to make it good.

I currently have a 17-40 F4 L as my widest lens. It is a fantastic lens as those who have one will agree, but despite being a fantastic lens I am feeling it just isn't quite wide enough on my 20D - when doing landscapes I always find myself at the wide and and steping back.

Now the 10-22mm looks very appealing indeed on the wide end, and reports suggest it is a top quality lens. But if I get the 10-22mm I would have to sell the 17-40 L. I like my 17-40L. A lot.

DILEMMA!!!

Please, oh wise ones of POTN, help me with my dilemma, and prevent me from tearing my hair out!

My current lens lineup

17-40L
28mm F1.8 USM
50mm F1.8 Mk One
(Looking for 85mm F1.8 )
70-200 F4L
100-400 L IS

Should I trade the 17-40L for the 10-22mm?
How does the 10-22 compare in edge to edge sharpness to the 17-40?

Thankyou for reading

There are other options out there, I'm currently looking at the Tokina 12-24 f/4 lens which goes for around $500. Tamron makes an 11-18 for $570, and Sigma has one on the way a 10-20mm for $500 just not sure on the date for that one.

Hello Richard,

You have the 28mm prime as well as the 17-40, so why does it have to a replacement (apart from the obvious money consideration)?

You have the high end telephoto and the fifty, but two lenses at the short end. I guess you find this the most useful, so why not 'flesh out' the wide angle choices. They are all good for different reasons.

The really good thing is that with the second hand values being so strong, that you could buy it and see which is best and still not lose a huge amount. You may keep them all, so it might be too tempting.

The grass is always greener, so don't lose a lens that you freely admit you love for a young 'un that may just be a fling!

Graham

Having had the tamron 28-75 and disliked it, and also had disagreements with sigma lenses I have decided I will be sticking with the canon. Personal choice. once bitten, twice shy.

Hi Graham and thanks :)
That is the exact reason it has to be a replacement. I am unfortunate enough to have zero spare cash hence the dilemma.

Most of my work is actually done at 70mm + hense why I have the telephoto almost doubled up. Wide is reserved for landscapes only so I know that I don't need multible lenses at that range. But you last commend it what I feel. The grass is always greener, but is it? My dilemma!

I'm looking at second hand values a different way. If I sell or trade the 17-40 then don't get on with the 10-22 then it is possible that it wouldn't cost a great deal to return to the 17-40. I truly wish both lenses was possible and then decide what to keep but for me it simply isn't an option.

Thanks for your input so far. Currently I think I am leaning towards the 10-22mm but it is only a slith lean right now!
