I'm looking for a simple handheld rig that has the ability to hook up an audio recorder that takes an external XLR mic that you can connect to the rig.
I remember seeing one about a months ago but don't know what it was called. It wasn't the redrock everyone talks about. It was black and red (not Zacuto).
Basically what are people using? What's out there? What's good? Bad?
(I know this has been posted before, but what info are you guys finding that's good?)

I don't know. When you get a system figured out, please clue me in. ;)
My current plan is to use the inexpensive Zoom H2 for audio and sync it with the video during post. The H2 should be here next week.
It sounds like you are looking for a much more sophisticated setup than the H2 though...

Zoom makes some good products, the H2 and H4n. So does M-Audio (formerly Midi), MicroTrack II. And Edrol makes a really nice one too. Google those names.
Personally, I own the M-Audio MicroTrack II. I love how it sounds and works. It will record mp-3s or BWF for higher quality recordings. It comes with a removable stero mic and has two different size inputs, mini jack and 1/4 jacks. I haveused both and find them to be equal in quality. I have used this recorder on large jobs where the camera was the Red One (POS) where the audio inputs are totally bogus and worthless. So a secondary recorder was needed. The MicroTrack II uses CF cards as it's media (handy as most of us use CF cards already) and it has a rechargable Li-Ion battery. The one downside to this recorder is that you can't have the device plugged into AC power while recording (a buzz is inbedded into the recording), not usually a problem, but on longer recording sessions, the battery life becomes an issue. I wouldn't mind if the MicroTrack II had the ability to have replacable batteries as opposed to the rechargable one.
