I guess it's my turn to say I finally did it! Ordered a 20D body and picked up a Tamron 28-75 2.8.

I'm really posting to say thanks to all of you. After using a 35mm Minolta SRT 101 years back (I bought it new in the 70's), then getting into digital with a Canon G3 and learning Photoshop, I decided to step up the game. I've been searching and reading here since mid-April and have found help with deciding on a body and lens, searching for good prices, things to watch out for, things to consider in a case and tripod, flash - my next likely purchases - and more.

This is a significant chunk of change I’m putting down as you know (and will continue to put down) and thanks to your experiences and willingness to spend the time to share I have confidence in my choices.

Thanks again!

Hmmmm now, what should I have for my brown bag lunch tomorrow?…

The first time you hold that 20D with the Tamron 28-75 attached you will completely forget about having to eat macroni for the next couple of years. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Congrats, you are going to love it.

My first camera was also a Minolta SRT 101 and I loved it. :)

I also upgraded to the 20D recently (after having loved the 300D). You will love it. Besides, Digital SLRs are great to learn as you can miss a lot of shots without consequences and use the Exif data to analyze what went wrong. You won't be disappointed by the quality of the pics either.

The ability to change Iso from one shoot to the other is absolutely great.

You should expect it to be an expensive hobby as it is predictable that you will soon look for a wide angle and for a telephoto zoom, a tripod, a bag, compact flash cards, etc...Be ready to live happy with an empty wallet :D

Never owned a Minolta SRT 101 myself but remember when they were all the rage. Coincidentally, there's one for sale in my local Jessops shop window now. Can't remember the price but I think it's about £100 with f1.4 lens. Who, if anybody, now buys the film cameras I see for sale?

The first SLR I ever bought in the mid 1960's was a Minolta SR1 with f1.8. I recall it came from Dixons as a kit supplied with their own 35mm and 135mm lenses which didn't have fully automatic diaphrams.

Anyway, enough of my reminiscensing - enjoy your new camera as much as I did my first SLR all those years ago.

Regards, David :) My next camera will likely be a 20D.

Thanks all! Wow. I'm amazed to see some of you remember the Minolta! One great thing about it, besides the excellent pictures I was able to get, was that it was all manual - you HAD to learn the effect of different aperture-shutter combinations.

Funny thing is even after all this time with the G3, I still forget I can set the ISO now as pointed out by lordjim. Used to be if you wanted to push the ISO you had to have the entire roll of film developed to that setting. I've had to develop a chant to myself when I go to shoot - ap-shutter-ISO ap-shutter-ISO.

I wonder will you still be saying thanx when you see you wallet or what's left of it in a few months time ;-)

Congrats on the purchase, have fun.

And mine! I ordered my 20D last night! Told my parents I would be buying the camera that evening, when told how much.... they were a little shocked to say the least! And then the lenses... that's another story!
I'll be daydreaming through all the rest of the exams if I can't control myself...

Daydreaming is right... I'm out of school now and working. I've been dwelling on getting a new camera since I started working, the day I got out of school. (26th of May) Since then I've switched from the 300D to the 350D, and just today decided I'd hold out even longer for the 20D as well. After looking at the site with the 20D vs. 350D it really did change my mind. Good luck with your camera, hope to see some good photos from you and me both =P

Good old Minolta. Mine was the SRT 303 (sold in the US I think as a 102) which replaced a Yashica. I remember it well because it had a sticking aperture ring. I sent it away at least twice, then in desperation decided to have a look inside. Getting the top cover off was no problem, and everything went well till I turned the camera upside down. Strings and pullies fell in all directions! Away it went to be fixed again. They never did fix that darn sticking ring. You won't be able to do that with your 20D. I'm sure you'll enjoy it anyway ;)

Congrats.

PB&J and store brand granola bars are holding me off while I restore an old car AND follow a Photography hobby AND a computer hobby.

It only gets better :D
