View Full Version : Photoshop CS 2.0 Won't Open CR2 Files

20D arriving tomorrow! So bought Photoshop CS 2.0 today to be ready. I have some samples I took at local Ritz shop to give me something to play with. Bought David Bush's book "Photographer's Guide", which says CS 2.0 will open 20D RAW files (which would be .CR2, right?) just by selecting. The Adobe manual is silent about RAW files. Supposedly the plug-in is supposed to automatically launch. Instead I get "..not the right kind of document." and won't open the file. What am I missing?

My copy of CS2 opened 20D RAW (CR2) files out of the box. You could try getting the 3.1 RAW update from here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows).

Pretty disappointed in Adobe. I did the "check for updates" and nothing came up. I see a DNG + RAW update and a RAW only update, both dated 5/5. If I select DNG+RAW do I get RAW 3.1, or do I need to download both of these?

You get both, but if you choose, you can ignore DNG. It's a standalone program.

So there is no way of reading CR2 files on a Photoshop CS? No updates even? Hmmm..thats why it can't read the RAW files from my 350D! Any suggestions?

If the XT isn't supported yet, it will soon. Chillax. The XT is fairly new, give them some time.

the rebel xt's raw files can not be opened with ps CS..however they can be with CS2 with the plugin

what us xt owners and PS CS users have to do is use the DNG converter then open its file in CS..

My CS reads CR2 just fine (20D). I am using Camera Raw v2.4.

So unless 20D CR2 files are different from 350D CR2 files then You should be able to read them with this version of camera raw.

Download here (http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2699)

I think all cameras RAW files are different. Which is why lots of people want an open standard for RAW.

OK, broke the code. Documentation says CS2 supports "20D", but does not ship with the plug in (bought mine today from a high volume vendor) and "check for updates" doesn't seem to include plugins. 3.1 claims to add RebelXT support. An important detail is that you have to download 3.1, unzip it, then copy it into the Plug-in section of C:\Program Files, etc. Adobe tells you the path. When PS CS2 launches it first scans for plug ins, and if it isn't in the right spot it won't find it. WIth 3.1 installed, I now can open CR2 files.

2.4 Camera Raw will open anything

I have 3.0 for the 20D and it is fine.

I expect my 3.0 would have worked as well, just that Adobe didn't install it, so it wasn't found.

I have Photoshop CS2 and it is opening all of my files from my 20D. I just installed it the other day and didn't have to update it or anything. I really llike the utility that it has for .CR2 files. The ability to integrate the funtions that you see in the Canon software with my everyday photo program is awesome. I don't know what is going on but if you purchased the program I would call their support line as they should be able to walk you through anything that might be causing the issue. Check the help file as well.

If you have CS (not CS2) you need the Cameras RAW plugin, but it's free, it's working and it's doping the job. Just read the information Adobe delivers, it helps....

No, my package is brand-new CS 2.0. Seems to just not have installed properly, but updating to the newer plug-in (and locating it properly) fixed it all. Case closed.

I do also have CS 2, downloaded DNG + RAW update andeverything working just great with my 20D RAW files.

(and after all this is not Adobe problems that RAW format is not standartized, and every manufacture use their own format)

I also have the same problem. Now, it is solved. This is how I did it.
1 - download DNG_Camera_Raw_3_6 from adobe.com
2 - extract the zip file.
3 - copy the camera raw plug ins into your C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Bridge\Plug-Ins

launch your adobe and click on bridge. select your .cr2 file and double click on it. The camera raw program will launch and you can do your touch-up there and then. the only problem is, there is no preview from the thumbnail, maybe someone here can tell us how to get the preview.

correction to the above for step 3.
3 - copy the camera raw plug ins into your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats
4 - lauch bridge programme either via adobe or as stand alone.
5 - choose one of your cr2 folder and you might not see the preview yet.
6 - select multiple of them and right click on any of your selected items.
7 - from the menu, choose clear camera raw settings.
instantly you will see previews of your CR2 files.

thanks n regards

Greetings,

I've been a long time snooper on this forum and I want to tell you all how much I appreciate everybody sharing their knowledge, experience, and passion for photography. I check this forum out daily for new morsels to chew on and to live vicariously through others purchases! Thanks for letting me tag along!!!
Sorry to be a little off topic, but I thought I'd capitalize on the Photoshop discussion to ask if PS CS 2.0 can work as a stand alone program, or do I have to purchase the whole >$800 Adobe suite?

Thanks,

hank

It works just fine without the other software included in the total suite package.

Thanks SkipD,

I thought so, but it just seems astronomically expensive if you're buying it without upgrading from Photoshop Elements. Is a matter of fact, unless I'm not reading Adobe's site correctly, it seems more fiscally savvy to buy PSE for 99 dollars and then buy the upgrade to CS2.0 than purchase CS2.0 for $600 plus. I'm I not understanding something?

Thanks again,

Hank

Do yourself a big favor and get PhaseOne's Capture One. I too have CS2 and it works miracles. However Phase One's raw converter is the best on the market and reduces raw processing by a bunch. Get the LE trial version for free for 15 days. It costs about $100.00 after that. WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Yes that will be the smartest way to go if you get the PS Elements 5.0 and then upgrade to CS2 for $170, The only difference between the $600 "full" and $150 "upgrade" is that the upgrade installer checks for a valid previous version before it proceeds -- the software itself is exactly the same.

Juy,

Perfect! That's exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate your insight.
