i found this video on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQXpb9Wfo_w), so i set out to attempt this today...i tried setting up mine similar to the video (he has a diagram):

lumopro 90 degrees from subject camera left, 1/8 power bare flash, head zoomed to 28 (minimum).
lumopro 45 degrees from subject camera right, 1/8 power bare flash, head zoomed to 28 (minimum).
camera at ISO 400, f/8, increased shutter speed to darken the background.now, according to the flash, at ISO 400, f/8, and 1/8 power the distance from flash to subject is 6ft...granted, he used vivitar flashes in the vid, but notice his flashes are much further from the subject than that - maybe 10-12 ft...i went with what the flash says to use (6ft) and the light is very harsh...

shouldn't i follow the distance-to-subject on the back of the flash? any tips?

hmm, was my question too confusing? basically, i used the distance-subject numbers on the back (which stated 6ft) and it was very harsh...but, the vid showed a pretty big distance...am i misunderstanding how to use the distances on the back of flashes?

if this is not clear, please let me know and i'll try too clarify....

What flashes are you using are they set to manual or the thyristor do you have any examples of what you are getting that you can share?

flashes - lumopro L120 (http://www.mpex.com/browse.cfm/4,12311.html) (from mpex, replaced vivitars), all manual, fired using cybersyncs (if that matters at all)...

if you happen to look at those flashes on their site, the pic of the distance-to-subject is different than that on the back of the flashes i received - so i went with what was actually on my flash rather than the website...

of course you'd ask for a sample! :) i did't post anything because the results were obviously bad...i'm at work right now and will post one this afternoon when i get home...

edit: it was mentioned that since i used 2 flashes, the distance would be different than that listed on the flash because i was providing more light..sounds correct, logically speaking...so, if this is true, how would i go about figuring the distance-to-subject based on the chart on the flash when using 2 flashes instead of one?

work has been crazy...here are two shots...one has the lights 6 ft away and the second has the light camera left moved to about 8 ft away...(light camera right didn't seem to have an impact, but i wasn't too concerned about that one because it was the light hitting the fact i was questioning)...thoughts on the light camera left, hitting the face...
