These two trains were photographed within minutes of each other, as we sailed upstream on our river boat in the Danube canal near Constanza, Romania. Almost all of the trains we saw in Eastern Europe were electrified. Also, I noticed that all the train cars are link coupled, with bumpers on the ends of each car. Cement ties rule, and we found the travel by train to be fast and usually smooth.

Those trains are quite different looking than the ones here in the states.

That's very interesting - electric engines pulling freight. You won't see that here in the states, at least not these days. Diesels are the rule (though they are really diesel-electrics, essentially a power plant on wheels with electric motors providing the driving force).
They still run electric transit service in many cities, but generally not freight.
