Actually, there's a 1.4 converter in the mix.
During my Yosemite visit last week, I stopped at El Capitan to search the rock face for climbers. With a tripod and my bro-in-law's eagle eyes, we found a few climbers. The area highlighted in red is where we spied the climbing party.
How well did the lens/converter do? Should I get rid of the lens? ;-)

Lens seems fine! Your sensor could use cleaning though!

Yikes I see that now.
Am I dreaming or did I hear that the push/pull zoom sucks dust into the sensor area?

Zooms suck! That's why I bought the 400mm prime. ;-)

yes they do suck, as far as I know its a service job to get the dust out.

That's a pretty blanket statement. While I have a wide range of primes I still use my 100-400 a fair bit. There are times where you need that other focal length and you just don't have the time. I just spent the weekend shooting with 4 other photographers and several times throughout the weekend you could see all 5 of us with our 100-400's in use.
ayotnoms - nice shots. The 100-400 is great lens at a very affordable price that offers great versatility.

400mm prime is good....wish I could afford one. One must make choices in life, no?

I'm not crazy about the push/pull, but getting shots like this will help me get over it. As for the dust, I've--v e r y delicately-- cleaned the sensor before. This shouldn't be a problem. In fact, I used the camera this weekend and didn't have the smudge. spooky...

I used a 17-40mm for the wide shot. The lens is awesome!!!

Couldn't agree more. Thanks for the comments! ;)

I think you need a 600mm lens with a 2X TC ;)

Unless you use the push pull like a bicycle pump you shouldn't bring in any more dust then with any other lens
